Hi Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

What if while at Mass I noticed that a particle of food I ate an hour before stuck between my teeth and I could not remove it until brushing it, does this break my 1 hour fast in receiving Communion?

Thank you.

A particle of food that escaped your notice for that length of time is not going to be substantial enough to break your fast. There is also the matter if intent. You didn’t leave it there with the intention of snacking on it later.

You are not to eat <1 hour before Communion. But if the food is stuck in your teeth you did not EAT IT <1 hour ago. You ate it much earlier. No broken fast IMO.

I would suggest brushing your teeth before you go to church. It is the right thing to do. It is awful to have to sit next to someone with halitosis while in church, afterall.

You already ate it. Stop worrying about insignificant issues. Better to make sure your heart is pure than worry about your mouth! Not don’t worry about that. Just ask God to give you a clean heart!

There was no intention to eat food if something happened to fall from your teeth. This is scrupulous thinking.

Peace.
