For Dog lovers-- Nutro Dog food deaths?

I was wondering if any of you dog owners have your dogs on Nutro. Whether it be Nutro Max or Natural Choice and any other brand of Nutro. My MIL sent me this email for my dog is on Nutro.

It is long and I read most of it, but it seems as if dogs are dying just for being on Nutro. This is not part of the recall done in 2007, which was on can food. This is on dry dog food.

My dog has diarrhea and before that she has excessive hair loss. She also had a skin condition and was put on antibiotics. As this was not getting better, the vet tested her for hypothyroidism, which she did have. She was put on thyroid med and the hair loss was normal for her breed and it was great, but in the last month again, she has excessive hair loss and has the skin condition again. She was put on antibiotics again. Now she has diarrhea and is on yet another antibiotic for the intestines. She is off the Nutro for the doctor wants her only on Purina OM can food. She is sitting at the end of my legs and I can hear her bowel sounds without a stethoscope. I am very concerned for her.

Has anyone else had problems with Nutro?

By the way, to be safe, I will not allow her on Nutro anymore until I can find out for sure. I plan on going tomorrow to a Natural pet food store to see if I can help her.
 
No experience with Nutro, because I avoided it due to other bad reviews of it.

I highly recommend the Canidae line of foods. My puppy (40 lb GSP. 9 months) has been on it since I got him @ 10 weeks old, and he loves it. I get the kibble for about $36 for a 40lb bag, and he gets just 2 cups a day for his age/weight,(vs about 4-5 cups of other cheaper foods full of filler) so the bag lasts a good 2 months. He also is nuts for the Canidae snap biscuits for treats, over ANY other fancy schmancy treat I’ve tried. I constantly get compliments on his coat, even from the vet.

Innova, Wellness and Fromms are supposed to be good too, but quite a bit more expensive, and from what I have researched, Canidae is just as good.

Actually, there were several kinds of dry food implicated in the deaths & illnesses seen in pets. Not just the cans.
The only brand of dry food that seemed to escape that disaster, was Purina. I no longer have all the list saved, but I know that my cat has been given only Purina (dry), & 9 Lives (canned) since that time, up till about a month or two ago.
Purina was not buying any of its ingredients fromthe sources that were selling tainted product.
I would not give an animal any food that s/he had been sick on. Not at this piont in time. I am too frightened by the possiblities!
 
My dog eats Nutro Max Large Breed Adult, and is very healthy. The no-kill shelter he lived at for nearly a year fed him Nutro Max and we just kept him on it. No problems here!

When the recalls happened, I seem to remember that Nutro dry foods were not affected. I checked… not wanting my dog to get sick.
 
Well, I don’t know anything about Nutro foods but can attest to the Purina brand. My dog, a poodle - a breed known for stomach problems, has collitis and does best on Purina One lamb and rice formula, he now has arthritis so needs to take a pain killer daily and I give him glucosamine (just like me) so he gets a third of a can of Purina One lamb and rice with his glucosamine mixed in and his pill stuck in a bit of it. The rest of his nutrition comes from Purina One Lamb and Rice dry.

The cats, two siamese mixes (also a known breed for stomach issues) and a tortoise shell mix (we think part siamese because she has the meow) do best on Purina One Cat food for Sensitive tummies - they did well on kitten food but don’t need the calories now that they are 1 year olds.

All of these pets are pound pets, adopted either from the local animal control or from the no kill shelter. The dog was 2-3 years old when we got him so I have no idea what he was fed before we got him, just found the Purina One worked best and the cats we got as kittens so they pretty much went from momma’s milk to weaning with whatever the shelter had on hand to us.

Oh, for the cats, we did try some of the “natural” foods and they ended up with explosive diarhea so that won’t necessarily be the best.

I went to a Natural dog pet food store recently and took my dog off of Nutro. She too was on Nutro puppy and than Nutro Max for adults and no problem, but the lady at the dog food store said Nutro was recently bought out by another company two years ago and they are not strict on what they put into the dog foods. She told me that what the FDA won’t allow companies to put in our human food because it can cause cancer, they are allowed to put in dog foods.

You dog may be fine now, but keep an eye on her. If she or he starts to have stomach issues or skin problems, try taking them off of Nutro first before your vet bills goes so high as mine did. My MIL’s dog was also on Nutro for she was the one to recommend it to me. All of her greyhounds had stomach issues and she did not know why and the youngest developed a huge tumor on his hip. All three have died.
