The only “Gollum” I hear scratching and gasping for precious precious power is Mary Gail.

I think contemplative that you have missed the point, again and again and again.

Firstly regarding tattoos. You obviously missed the symbolism she is drawing. She isn’t saying that Jesus would have tattoos and piercings and a camoflaged jacket, but if Jesus would have come now instead of 2000 years ago, he would have also come today as he came 2000 years ago, as a poor generaly unnoticable person. I often think that I would also have not noticed him, just as I often fail to see him in others, especially those mentioned in the Beatitutes.

You obviously have no experience with the poor if you think that the poor are too poor to afford a tattoo. The fact is that the poor are more likely to have tattoos, use drugs and alcohol and smoke (along with many other “expensive” activities):

Studies show that smoking prevalence is higher among those with 9-11 years of education (35.4 percent) compared with those with more than 16 years of education (11.6 percent). It’s highest among persons living below the poverty level (33.3 percent). americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4559

The highest percentage of heavy drinkers (12.2%) is found among unemployed adults between the age of 26 to 34.

Right now is the right time to put in a plug for women priestesses.
How you construed female priests from her complaint about the Bishop refusing to wash females feet (presumably on Holy Thursday) is beyond me. But some people will read anything into a statement or say anything to defame an intelligent person who has challenged their views.
I equally disapprove of people like Mary Gail when they waltz in not only criticizing but trying to rewrite the Church based on worldly knowledge acquired in liberal institutions designed for the wealthy and powerful in this world.
LOL, you are obviously ignorant of the Catholic Church’s medieval contribution to the world, namely the institution of the University. But as Erasmus noted in “The Praise of Folly” “There are monks [and religious] who believe it is the height of piety to be so ignorant that they cannot even read.” (p.164)

Besides, she not only didn’t ‘waltz in’, she was especially invited and here is her “heretical speech” to the USCCB usccb.org/bishops/frawley.shtml

Please feel free to “waltz” through that speech and show me where this “heretic” covertly attempted to undermine Catholicism.
There is more than a disturbing tone to Mary Gail’s letter. There is substance and that substance is heretical. And furthermore, I would never go so far as to compare Mary Gail to good and holy people like St. Catherine of Siena Erasmus, St. Jerome and St. Thomas More
Given your track-record on mis-interpreting just about everything she says, I can’t help but feel that your claims of heresy are about as well founded as your criticisms.

I am also led to believe that you have never read two words by any of those authors or saints. Including especially St. Jerome:

“I might, with perfect right, treat my detractors with contempt: for it is useless to play the lyre for an ***” (Letter to Marcella)

“Against it Jerome wrote his “Dialogue”, scathing in sarcasm, but not always accurate in doctrine, particularly as to the Sacrament of Confirmation.” newadvent.org/cathen/08341a.htm

I find it personally edifying to know that there are Catholics like Dr. O’Dea out there and that our shepherds are listening to the informed and rational views of these people.

So you want to drag this tattoo/piercing business out some more?

Where are the statistics of tattoo & piercing on prevalently poor people? Smoking and alcohol are addictions and do not apply to what Mary ‘Gollum’ Gail speaks of in her letter. Again, Mary ‘Gollum’ Gail’s comment about this business is not only impious but also shows how ignorant she is of how people really are.
How you construed female priests from her complaint about the Bishop refusing to wash females feet (presumably on Holy Thursday) is beyond me. But some people will read anything into a statement or say anything to defame an intelligent person who has challenged their views.
Feminists love to attack the Priesthood on Holy Thursday. I see this time after time. A few Holy Thursdays ago I had to sit for a homily given by a female ( while the priest sat and listened). She started her homily out like this…" Someday I hope that I don’t have to explain to a 10 year old girl why she can’t be a priest".
This feminist was among those getting her feet washed Holy Thursday. I know of other horror stories similar to this. I can smell the feminist odor in Mary Gollum Gail’s words. The Catholic priesthood is for men only.
LOL, you are obviously ignorant of the Catholic Church’s medieval contribution to the world, namely the institution of the University.
The key word here is medieval. Universities are not what they used to be. Students and parents are hard-pressed to find even a ‘true’ Catholic college or university today. This is a sad but true fact. What is being taught in most schools is a bunch of liberal c**p. Mary Gollum oozes with this worldly crud in her letter.
I find it personally edifying to know that there are Catholics like Dr. O’Dea out there and that our shepherds are listening to the informed and rational views of these people
I have no doubt you do. The only problem is these people ( Mary Gollum included) are only worldly. Your defination of informed and rational parallel world views rather than religious views.
Unfortunately for you and Mary Gollum and the likes of her, she has done nothing more than make public see just how worldly a person she is. She has you might say " been the baton leader for the short parade of liberalism". She has had her day. Her recent book will be shelved for awhile and then find it’s way to the recycle bin for refuse to pick up.

She would be blessed to have the opportunity to carry a pail and shovel at the end of the parade of liberalism to pick up the doo doos she left behind. Yes, that would be a great blessing and honor to have.

The term “nazi” has no place in the discussion of civilized people unless one is referring to actual Nazis.

Pheww! What a heated and charged letter full of accusations.
From the letter:

“Last week at Villanova, a woman took to the microphone and told Justin Cardinal Rigali that he is a phony. Harsh truths sometimes require harsh words. You, sir, in my opinion, also are a facade of the Christ follower.”

Are these people expecting others to take them seriously? Trashing Cardinal Rigali on the side? Rigali is an excellent and faithful Cardinal. I don’t care how much alphabet soup someone puts after their name, the letters so often always come up spelling baloney.

These 2 statements:

But some people believe that any rebuking of authority (as long as it is a conservative in authority) is impious and proud. Some will even go so far as to repeat the rediculous claim that there is a liberal conspiracy to overthrow the Church
are somewhat contradictory. Which is it? Are we against impious relativistic secular-minded attacks and unfounded condemnation of a Bishop’s faith - a Bishop that is standing against relativistic secular-minded influences within his area of the Church - or are we against any constructive criticism of a Bishop?

I think you know the answer but prefer whatever blanket criticism you can launch at those that rightly oppose untruths when they see them.

I will pray for the pompous on this board who claim to know the state of a person’s soul because of a heated letter criticizing (rightly or wrongly I do not know) a bishop and who inturn discredit all her scholarship and scholarship in general.
Discredit what scholarship? That letter was scholarship? I’m discrediting the content of the letter. What you are suggesting is that many are “pompous” that wouldn’t agree with anything someone wrote simply because they have certain credentials. Does that seem logical?
