Enjoy the Best Christmas CD thread, but since my reaction to the overwhelming favorite, Manheim Steamroller, is so negative to the point of breaking out in hives, I feel compelled to give equal time to the loyal opposition.

Worst Christmas CD or Song for me is any pop, rock or country star who “interprets” and “arranges” traditional carols in their own style. I refuse to listen to the Christian music station from Thanksgiving to New Years because O Holy Night will be butchered by every singer and group (including the Chipmunks) who has ever recorded a “Christian” music album. If you name is not Luciano Pavorotti, please give this tune a miss.

I abhor Kenny G’s Christmas, Elvis’ Christmas, Christmas with the Beastie Boys, anybody’s Christmas who feels compelled to alter traditional lyrics, music and arrangements.

Thank you. I cry every time I hear Pavarotti sing O Holy Night, because he sings a verse in French – as did departed members of my family. I miss them.

I can’t agree more, especially when the Chipmunks are involved. As an aside, I’ve heard that Chipmunk makes and excellent substitute for sausage in stuffing. 😃

Also, even though I love dogs, I want to choke the guy who recorded the barking Jingle Bells.

I’ll bet you cannot even imagine the Rappers or Hip-Hop types doing there (naturally dignified) versions of holy Christmas songs? (me either) I wouldn’t be surprised to see the ACLU defend them and wish to remove the originals. Is Karen Carpenter alright, her old Christmas songs versions seem pretty nice to my ears? Maybe someone can point out the worst Christmas CD available. The classics are the best and same to be said about movies.

Hey now!! Watch what ya say about the barking dogs!

also the grandma song, which is at least as obnoxious as the barking dogs, you know the one I mean. In walmart the other day the in-store music, and 3 different electronic devices were each playing a different version of the grandma song. I will not be going to walmart until after Christmas.

Beach Boys Christmas - something about sand and snow doesn’t mix for me…

Do you mean “Grandma got run-over by a Reindeer?” Yes, that is REALLY annoying!

To add to the dog CD there’s also one with cats supposedly doing Christmas, really winter songs, too. Now, I’m a cat person through and through, but even I can’t stand it! Blech!!!

Oh Martha,

OH HOLY NIGHT IN FRENCH 🙂 Isn’t it beautiful? I live in Southern Maine & many of us are french, every year, the men’s bible group in our Parish would sing at the 4pm Mass on Christmas eve. One of the older men always sang Oh Holy Night in french. The church was always packed & they always received a standing ovation for that song. Do you know which CD Pavarotti sings the song in french??? DOES ANYONE know where I can find the French version of that beautiful song?

We have a new music minister & I must tell him to ask the Men’s group to sing this year. They haven’t sung for a year. I long for OH
HOLY NIGHT. IF they had a crying smilie, it would go here.😦

Merci Beaucoups,
Claire B from ME

AMEN and AMEN.

I’m pretty sure that the soundtrack in purgatory is Manheim Steamroller.

To add - my son cringes when anyone plays “Mary Did You Know” because I begin screaming “OF COURSE SHE DID”…

My mother’s name was Claire B also, and she was from Brunswick!!!

I feel your pain – :crying: I’m tempted to offer to sing a verse in French myself this Christmas eve after our folk choir director’s son with the operatic voice does the first two verses in English. If I put my heart into it, maybe I can do it justice. I’m just afraid I’d break down crying before I have to attempt to hit the high note.

There are a couple of Pavarotti CD’s that I know of on which he sings “Cantique de Noel”: “The Ultimate Collection” and “O Holy Night.” Only thing is, he sings verses in English and French, not just French.

Martha,

Pavarotti in french & english will do! You made my day!

Merci Beaucoups, ma soeur! (spelling?-I am trying to say, thankyou very much, my sister!) 👍

De rien, cherie! Enjoy!! 😃

Kenny G does Christmas, Elvis does Christmas, Brenda Lee does Christmas, Dolly Parton does Christmas, I think we need a poll to pick the worst.

what I really hate is going to a school or university chorale or band concert clearly billed as a Christmas concert (yes they still use the C word down here) and all the songs are secular, have nothing to do with Christ or his nativity. I want my money back.
I do love Tuba Christmas, however, they can play anything they like.
