I read the original Jerusalem Bible (1966). I have the big one that comes with the heavy slipcover. It is so good to study with. The problem is getting a good carry around text edition. I have bought used softcovers but they don’t hold up so well. I have also bought the reprinted hardback by doubleday. The print is blurry. I have recently come across the UK version via Powells books. I received mine yesterday and am very pleased. It’s a nice blue cloth hardback. The print is better. It cost a few dollars more and takes a few weeks to get. You can only get via the website.

I, too, ordered a used one online back in December 2000. I also have a New Jerusalem Bible. Both are the fully-annotated editions.

IMHO: I can appreciate and find useful much (not all) of the study material and notes and cross-references, but the renderings are a bit too avant-garde for me. Yes, they are notches above the NAB, but can’t stand up for beauty to the Douay-Rheims.

BTW - Does anyone out there actually know why this was Mother Angelica’s absolutely favorite Bible for study, teaching, etc.? Until the US Bishops put their collective leaden feet down, EWTN’s daily Masses used the text of JB in their Lectionary. Now they, like the rest of us, have to suffer through the hybridized NAB.

Anima Christi:
I dont really use the Jerusalem Bible (I prefer the RSV and Douay Rheims) but it looks like the Philippine Bible Society puts out a really nice one:

I would get that one if I were going to use the Jerusalem Bible.
I have that one. The PBS reprints the original JB, not the NJB or the JB Reader’s Edition, which means the study notes are complete.

Unfortunately, because the PBS Bibles are for mass distribution at low price, the hard binding deteriorates over time. I’m having one of my JB’s rebound in pigskin leather for that reason.
