? for Jews: Why do Jews no longer make animal sacrifices to God? Sin offerings and the like?

****PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THE FALSE ARGUMENT OF **“We don’t have a Temple” **since reading the Torah completely proves that to be a false argument since prior to the Temples being built, there were plenty of animal sacrifices made to God - Noah, Moses, Abraham, etc. They made their sacrifices out in the open or in tents.

I just want the REAL reason Jews no longer offer sacrifices to their God.

As Christians we know that all the animal sacrifices were fulfilled with Jesus on the Cross and that no additional sacrifices are necessary or accepted by God. God only accepts the Sacrifice of the Mass which is a continuation of Calvary, not a new Sacrifice, and that by receiving the Holy Eucharist, namely the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus, we participate in that Final Sacrifice which God accepts. - But that is the Christian point of view.

I’m looking for the valid Jewish reasoning behind the ending of the sacrifices to God.

Second, animal sacrifice is just one thing in the Old Testament Law that Jews don’t do. They no longer stone people to death; make menstruating women live outside of their normal habitation; put disobedient children to death; wear garment made of only one type of material; or do or many other things specified in Leviticus. Yes, it smelled exactly the way God wanted it to! You are calling God barbaric? Remeber it was God who commanded the Jews to make those animal sacrifices. I’ve not seen in any Jewish Text where God recinded His Command to them (of course, using the Christian Texts we see that Christ fulfilled those sacrifices, but Jews don’t use our Texts for their religion).

Monica the plain answer is the Temple has been destroyed. Reading the Torah does not make that completely false. It just shows your lack of knowledge. Once the Priesthood was established only valid sacrifices could be made by them. Eventually after construction of the Temple was complete all sacrifices were centralized there which was a decision made by the Rabbis and is reflected in the Mishnah and the Talmud.

After the destruction of the Temple in 70AD the Sadducees almost disappeared given their religious system was tied directly to the Temple. The Samaritans on the other hand continued their sacrifices outside of Jerusalem. The remaining Jews rejected going back to the pre-Temple days of offering sacrifices outside of the Temple and opted instead for the use of prayer. Actually this practice had already started prior to the destruction of the Temple but certainly accelerated after.

What you are not understanding is that animal sacrifice was not the only accepted mechanism if you will for atonement of sin. The Hebrew Bible shows that atonement may be accomplished through suffering or death, through sacrifice, or through repentance.

No. Sacrifices continued while the Temple was being repaired. There have not been 3 only 2.

No one is saying animal sacrifice was not required. Usually prayer and repentance were accompanied with the sacrifice. But now with the temple gone the Jews did face a dilemma. If you do some research into Yohanan ben Zakkai, he was considered the father of Rabbinic Judaism or the oral teachings of the Torah also known as what else, the oral Torah. Similar to the oral traditions and teachings Catholics claim were supposedly passed on outside of scripture.

Yohanan started the teaching of prayer and acts of loving kindness that could atone for sin. You may not agree with this and not consider Rabbinic law equal to Biblical law but the Jews do. So you could say that you are arguing for scripture alone for the Jews ehh??

That’s a great Christian answer! And I know that to be the case.

I just wonder what the valid Jewish explanation is, since if they believed Christ was the Messiah, they wouldn’t be Non-Catholic Jews.

Dear SMM, I hope you will live enough to see that the argument that we don’t offer sacrifices it’s because we still haven’t our Temple built back in its legitimate place is not a false argument.

The sacrifices did not stop with the death of Jesus, but after the Temple was destroyed by the Romans. Jesus died in the year 30 and the Temple was destroyed in the year 70.

And back when the Babylonians destroyed our first Temple, the sacrifices stopped for 70 years, and renewed as soon as we rebuilt our Temple. The same will happen pretty soon with the help of God. And I pray that you will one day travel to Jerusalem just to eyewitness what you doubt today. So, stay healthy, because it won’t take too long.

We have here a special Yeshiva of Cohanim (priestly Jews) in intensive preparation for that time.
