I have been feeling extreme guilt lately, for my sins. I cannot go to confession regularly, which upsets me greatly. I almost feel God is calling me to do something. Regardless, pray that God may give me strength and happiness throughout all this.

Also, if you happen to know good ways of dealing with guilt, feel free to share or PM me about it. Thank you all sincerely for your prayers, and God bless.

Gracious and merciful Father, please come to their assistance.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.

Lord,
I pray for your follower
that he may find the strength
to persevere through the light
that his eyes may be opened
and he come to know
that all have sinned
it is in light we are blinded
as though by perceived darkness

Lay your guilt at the feet of Our Blessed Lord. When we are truly sorry, He knows and in His infinite mercy, forgives us. We just have to go on praying and talking to God as if to our own Father - trusting in His unfailing love for us. The pain of guilt, whether deserved or exaggerated, is vicious and if we allow it, will stifle us, preventing us from laying it down in order to get on with our lives. When you feel able, tell your Priest how you feel and hopefully he will guide you towards the peace of heart you seek.

I pray that God will bless you in every way and that you will feel His love. :console:

Our Father,
Who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

I’m sorry you’ve been feeling guilty. 😦

Well, one thing is regret, and the other is guilt. Regret is, in a sense, good, because it helps us learn from our mistakes and move forward. Regret gives us life, in a sense, is a positive emotion.

However, guilt is a negative emotion, which is rather poisonous, doesn´t allow us to move forward. Guilt kills and maims.

When you make a mistake, it’s okay to regret that but guilt is unhelpful. Just learn from the mistake for the next time, but guilt can prevent us from carrying on, which isn’t good.

In Alcoholic’s Anonymous, a lot of the members feel TREMENDOUS guilt over past behaviors. So, they tell them “Yesterday is a cancelled check”, “water under the bridge”.

It’s like they say, “Let ´by gones´ be ´by gones´”.

Well, what can potentially happen, like with alcoholics, for example, is one makes a mistake, is overcome by guilt to the point he runs out to a bar, has a few drinks to try to feel better. Also, people who struggle with food addictions, if they feel guilty, can run to the refrigerator to try to feel better, as well.

So, your 12-step programs, and others, have learned that guilt is really NOT the way to go. That, instead of healing, it wounds.

When we feel guilty, it also tends to weaken our self esteem, with a weakened self esteem, it is hard to achieve much of anything.

So, insofar as guilt goes, strive to stop feeling guilty. If/when you make a mistake, learn from it. If necessary, apologize or if really necessary, offer restitution. After that, LET IT GO! Please do NOT dwell on it any further, because that will hold you back from your mission. If you are unhappy, guilt wracked, how can you help others? The best position to help others from is one where you are “together” and happy. :twocents:

Insofar as happiness, it is not external but internal. It comes from within.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

With past actions, they are in the past. You can´t change any of that. Christ asked us what good worrying would do, that, by worrying, we couldn´t even change the color of one hair! So, he asked why we bothered.

Guilt, to me, is sort of a kind of worry.

Again…if you are going to worry, worry about something you can change! The past doesn´t fall into that category. Let GO of the past! Put your focus either on the present or the future, but the past, unless you want to do something like therapy, work through repressed emotions, dwelling on the past probably won´t help.

If you DO decide to delve into the past, it needs to be with the intent of feeling the emotions in order to LET GO of them…release the past, in order to be able to move forward more fully.

Guilt…isn´t that a form of fear?

We’re not called to be fearful.

Anyway, I think your intent counts. I think God understands when someone intended to do something but was prevented. That’s just my personal belief. Maybe someone is a minor, and their parents don´t take them to confession often.

In that case, I don´t know how responsible God will hold one. Do you see my point?
I believe in a God who is fair, that wouldn´t hold something like that against one. I believe in a just God, myself.

of thy womb,
Jesus.

Mother of God,

and at the hour of our death

One great thing I myself have had great difficulty with is , learning to forgive yourself ,
Most of us have done things which were grossly wrong,
after some reflection on our past actions , we realise what we did , was a very wrong thing to do, we might go to confession and be forgiven, gladly do penance , but even that is not enough, because we have not learnt to forgive ourselves,
it is by trying to understand WHAT made us do it , that we begin to understand why we did something, once we understand what made us do something we can better understand our own failing, we should all reflect and self analys to better understand ourselves , by that ,
We learn to forgive ourselves.

Yes! Guilt can take us in the opposite direction of where we’re trying to go. Instead of healing wounds, freeing us from the past to start fresh, we are basically stuck in the past.

Again, regret is something that can be helpful where we wish we had done things differently, but it’s different in that it allows us to learn, move forward.

With guilt, we dwell on the past, over and over and over. It also creates unnecessary fear and anxiety.

Personally, I don´t believe God wants us to be like that.

If you have children, would you want them to be guilt striken each time they made a mistake? In a similar way, I just believe God wants us to learn from our mistakes, forgive ourselves, as well, in the same way he wants us to forgive others, to include ourselves in the circle of those to forgive.
