For My Mother to Love Mass Again

Earlier today my mother mentioned that she only goes to Mass because it is expected of her. Years ago, I remember her being completely in love with the Mass. Please join me in asking our Immaculate Mother to help.

May I make a few suggestions?

There is a wonderful, small book called The Wonders of the Mass, published both in Spanish and English, on the Tan Books Website, by Fr. Paul O’Sullivan. Very interesting and fun,
easy to read, costs only 4.95. Tells you the spirtual benefits of attending Mass.

Perhaps she misses the Traditional Latin Mass. (I don’t know how old she is). If she is around 60 or more she may remember it. My father loved it and I think the change in language and format was very difficult for him and he stopped going. (I am not using this as an excuse, just an explanation).

There are folks who enjoyed the Solemnity of the Traditional Latin Mass, (kneeling for Communion, Communion available to receive on the tongue if desired, Traditional Organ hymns, high quality music, etc. However, they did not like or understand the Latin. A good solution is the Ordinariate. They have all the above features including receiving communion on the tongue and the priest facing ad orientem (towards God or east), like they did with the Latin Mass. At my Ordinariate Mass you may also receive by hand but you do kneel unless you have bad knees. It is not exactly the same as the Latin Mass but the music is Traditional Organ with high quality and some women do mantillas. The bonus for some is that it very reverent and in English. It is fully in Communion with Rome and the pope. The only thing is it is not available yet everywhere but it is growing.

Maybe sometime you could reminisce with her and find out what she did enjoy about Mass. Than you can visit different parishes until you find one she may enjoy.Then perhaps invite her to one.

I often attend the Ordinariate when I have time and the regular Ordinary Form when I am more busy. To me music is very important so I try to go to parishes where I know I will enjoy the hymns. I also love the Ordinariate Mass because of its solemness. There is great fellowship afterwards with some very interesting folks who are not a clique. I am not
ignored there like I have been at another parish because I didn’t attend their school. Also, i can fit in with these people because they are young, old, with children, without, etc. I help supply snacks, my brother brings coffee, and we all talk for an hour or so.

Maybe she could enjoy a meaningful volunteer group where she could make new friends, such as the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry, or a knitting/crocheting group to make prayer shawls. This might lead her back.

Trying praying the Rosary or a Rosary Novena for your intention. Or have a Mass said for “a special intention”.

God bless you for caring. Keep inviting her in a low pressure way. Let her see how happy you are to be attending Mass.

I apologize. I re-read your post. Your Mom still attends regularly. That is great! You want her to enjoy the Mass. I still recommend that book. There is also another good one that website for 14.95 that goes a little deeper into it. I still recommend my suggestions even though she attends regularly. God bless you.

Praying. It’s probably true that most of us feel that way at some point. We may feel that Mass is something to endure rather than something we like to do. What has helped me to enter in the Mass more fully is if i go early and spend some time Praying and connecting personally with God. Otherwise, without that personal connection it can just be like mechanical Mike going through the motions of Mass. And anything that is repetitive can become monotonous. Some people feel their needs are not met at Mass. Or they feel disconnected from others. Catholics do a lot of things at Mass because it is expected of them. Do not be too hard on your mother. Perhaps, she has a close relationship with Jesus, in other ways. There are probably some things she likes about the Mass. I don’t know anyone who is always completely satisfied with the Mass. We live in an imperfect world of imperfect humans. Nothing is going to be perfect until we get to heaven.
