I’m trying to understand the perspective of those people who are passionate about the supposed good Planned Parenthood does for society. I know it might be a stretch posting this on a Catholic web site and therefore may not find the answer I am seeking given the prevailing audience, but I honestly don’t understand the draw to desiring such an awlful organization to exist, let alone thinking it’s a good thing to be funded by the federal government.

There are lots of reasons. I live in a very liberal área and have very liberal friends. Here is the bulk of it.

First off these folks have a hang up on sex. Even more than the Catholic Church;) if you can believe it. They think premarital sex or ANY form of sex is a beautiful thing and how dare anyone suggest otherwise.

The problem is, like any sin this leads to problems. Unwanted children that are concieved, diseases, and the need to help “take care” of these things.

Planned parenthood will hook you up with anything you need for a wonderful sex adventure at the tax payers dime, and NOBODY will be any the wiser. Not the parents, not the father of the child who is currently being housed by the mom or anything of the sort. The government subsidizes these things because it saves THEM money and they win votes by a public who has rejected any morality related to a Religion (like no pre marital sex).

Basically the issue isn’t about sex, it’s not about health care, it’s not about anything of the sort really. Those die hard planned parenthood supporters care about 1 thing…Rejecting God. It’s hard to believe, but that is the basis of it. Planned parenthood is an outlet of sorts. It’s not them they are supporting…it’s the worship of themselves and the tools necessary to do it at any costs (even a life)

Thanks for this well written post. It’s helpful to me as well understanding the “other side” of support for PP. I think you got to the bottom line I never considered. A rejection of God.
Spot on in my opinion.

I agree with most of the above, but like to add 2 points:
  • PP and similar groups are not only supported because they seemingly “clear” up the “mess” but also because their philosophy is necessary to maintain the base assumption, that any consensual form of sex between adults or near adults is beautiful and nothing wrong with it, and “absolve” them of any regrets or contrary evidence;
cause even such people know, that even “safe” sex can result in pregnancies; if now unborn humans would have a right to life just like other humans, it would logically mean that not any consensual form of sex between adults or near adults is ok, namely such sex that has abortion as consequence in the end would be questionable as it would have a negative impact upon a third party;

so they need someone telling the world and themselves loudly its just a bunch of cells, otherwise their cor assumption would fall apart; especially, as with unborn humans having rights would at minimum place the burden upon adults to try to live their sexuality in such a way that avoids or at least minimizes dead tiny bodies; hence, some at least moral limitation of sex would be prudent
  1. They do not consciously reject God i think, but more precisely reject the idea that anyone has the authority to place rules upon people’s sexuality; that does include God; but actually as they are so convinced that consensual sex is always right, they cannot imagine that God’s laws might actually include limitations for sex, and hence conclude that if truly a god exists, he must be on their side, because he would be good and unrestricted sex is good;
so they reject the concept of God while assuming they do not actually reject him, as he isn’t as the Pro-Lifers claim Him to be

I wouldn’t call myself “passionate” about Planned Parenthood, but I think the fact that the majority of the work that they do, providing women’s health services to women who could not otherwise afford it, has as great deal to do with the support they receive. The abortion services they perform, while abhorrent, are really only a very small percentage of their activities. So while I understand the vitriol, I’m not one of those with pitchfork in hand. And it’s a bit of an overstatement to say “funded by the federal government.” Yes they do receive grants and reimbursements from the government, but the majority of their funding is from private sources.

Matt, please recheck your facts. Abortion is the main arena of PP, now coupled with the sale of body parts to line their overstuffed pockets. Womens health centers provide real health services. Planned parenthood does not. When a woman really comes to them 'for help" the only thing they push is killing the baby as this is the only profitable outcome for PP. Planned parenthood is an oxymoron The only plan they have is kill the baby and avoid parenthood.

Planned Parenthood does provide basic health care for women, such as Pap Smears. This is good for women who do not have health insurance.

I used to go there for screenings and preventive care. I did not have health insurance back then plus I was an atheist at the time.

Are there any alternatives for women’s health care other than Planned Parenthood?

In some communities Planned Parenthood is the only thing available for poor women with no insurance.

I am quite confident in my facts. I’m sorry they don’t fit the narrative of some people, but that doesn’t make them untrue. They provide a large number of women’s general and reproductive health services for women who, largely, do not have the financial means to get them elsewhere.

PP does 300000 abortions per year; per abortion 500$ is not unusual; so in total 150 Million $ per year revenue/turnover due to abortion; total revenue about 1.3 Billion $ (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_Parenthood);😉 hence, abortion is about 11% of PPs total revenue.

Would you tend to say that 150 Million $ revenue/turnover is small?
Would you tend to say that something totaling to 11% of revenue of a company is small for that company?

I am not going to dispute the number of abortions performed, that is not the point. Please note my earlier post where I said this was abhorrent. My point was that the remaining 89% (to use your figures) is for other health services that are provided to women who could not otherwise afford them. It is largely on this basis, I think, that there is significant support for PP, still.

I can understand the people who want to de-fund (at least in the governmental context) PP and why they do. To me, that is treating the symptoms and not the disease. It may have some limited effect on the near term, but really isn’t a long term solution, at least in my opinion. I don’t know what the long term solution is, I have no global answers. My concern against this reactionary approach is for the women who do rely on some of the other services supplied. It’s easy to say women can get these services elsewhere if you have never been poor and have always had options. That doesn’t make me pro-abortion, pro-choice or pro-Planned Parenthood. Just my $.02

The reason for my OP is that I had posted a link on my facebook page (meant for loved one’s who care for the life of unborn children) regarding an Appleton, WI Planned Parenthood which has ceased performing abortions. I was suddenly bombarded by posts from three relatives trying to debate how great Planned Parenthood is. I promptly deleted those posts as I didn’t want to start a debate, but just wanted to share my joy that babies are no longer being killed at the Appleton Planned Parenthood. For clarification, I didn’t even provide commentary on the link, so I didn’t use any language that may provoke people to a negative response…except I did include a 🙂 emoticon along with the post. Perhaps that is what set them off. 🤷

Consequently, these relatives accused my of silencing debate. 🤷 I suppose that is true in the sense that I didn’t want to debate the issue at all. These relatives have a very liberal mindset, so I suppose I should not be surprised by their reaction. Nonetheless, now I look like the bad guy for trying to ‘shut them up’ due to their opinion. I think it comes down to them needing to experience the grace of God in this situation. I certainly do not have the ability to convince people who have their mind made up about Planned Parenthood’s supposed great contributions to society (from their perspective anyway).

I sure hope so. If there aren’t, that would be a shame. I’ve seen people provide evidence that there are alternatives to Planned Parenthood. Not sure how accurate the information is. It’s difficult to trust information that is out there online. If someone out there has some solid information, that would be interesting to see.

Do i understnd correctly that the PP clinic just stopped abortions, but continues to perform all the other services of PP and that you just posted this as positive news?

That would put a dent into Matthews claim that support for PP is not because of its abortion service but due to other services.

If people would realy think PP great for the non-abortion services but disliked the abortion services, they should be fine with a clinic no longer performing abortions but providing all the rest.

Here’s the story:

jsonline.com/news/health/planned-parenthood-suspends-abortions-at-appleton-clinic-b99603724z1-337197121.html
Planned Parenthood suspends abortions at Appleton clinic
Madison— Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has suspended providing abortions at its Appleton clinic, meaning the procedure is not available anywhere in the state north of Madison and Milwaukee.
The Appleton clinic stopped providing abortions on Oct. 14 because of a “temporary gap in medical staff coverage,” according to a statement from Teri Huyck, president and chief executive officer of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. Abortions will again be offered in about six months and family planning services are not being halted, her statement said.
“This was a tough decision to make because we understand that it means some patients will have to travel further to access abortion care and additional delays are a possibility with such limited access,” her statement said.
Patients are being referred to Planned Parenthood’s clinics in Madison and Milwaukee. Another provider, Affiliated Medical Services, runs the state’s fourth abortion clinic, in Milwaukee.
The temporary stop for abortions in Appleton comes at a time when Planned Parenthood has fought legislation putting restrictions on abortion and targeting its funding. Huyck’s statement said the temporary stop of services was unrelated to the political fights.
Planned Parenthood and Affiliated successfully blocked a 2013 law that would have required those who provide abortions to have admitting privileges at hospitals within 30 miles of where they offer abortions. That law likely would have led to the closing of Affiliated’s clinic, and Planned Parenthood maintained it would not have been able to keep up with the increased patient load.
The U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago is considering an appeal by Attorney General Brad Schimel as he tries to put the admitting privileges law into effect.
This July, Gov. Scott Walker approved a law that bans abortions 20 weeks after fertilization. That law has not been challenged in court.
Unfortunately, the story I shared from another facebook user had a headline that was misleading:

lifenews.com/2015/10/26/wisconsin-planned-parenthood-closing-because-it-cant-find-anyone-to-kill-babies-in-abortions/
Wisconsin Planned Parenthood Closing Because It Can’t Find Anyone to Kill Babies in Abortions
A Wisconsin-based Planned Parenthood abortion clinic is closing because it can’t find anyone to kill unborn babies in abortions.
The Planned Parenthood clinic in Appleton, in northeastern Wisconsin is suspending abortions. WBAY-TV reports that the Appleton North Health Center stopped doing abortions on October 14 because it can’t find an abortion practitioner to work there. The facility says it will resume abortions in six months assuming it can find a new abortionist.
Planned Parenthood is referring women seeking abortions to clinics in Madison and Milwaukee in the meantime.
It’s this second link which caused the uproar with the first poster saying that the clinic wasn’t closing down and that I was spewing right wing rhetoric given that the clinic itself wasn’t closing down. The first poster objected to the subjectivity with the way the article was reported. The second two posters were raving about how great Planned Parenthood is. I didn’t want to debate the issue so I deleted their posts.

With that said, a couple years ago, the Appleton clinic did close down temporarily when Walker signed the law into being:

fox6now.com/2013/07/07/planned-parenthood-to-close-appleton-clinic-after-act-37-signing/
Planned Parenthood says that provision will force its Appleton clinic to close, and will lead to long waiting lists in Milwaukee.
“If there’s a long waiting list, that’s a real problem for women getting access. It’s a problem for their health. It can lead to tragic consequences. Just the sheer distance is a tremendous barrier,” Huyck said.
“If women don’t have a physician that can be with her during complications and can’t get admitting privileges, that speaks to how poorly that doctor may be viewed by that hospital,” Armacost said.
Planned Parenthood says the law will have an immediate impact. It is preparing to close its Appleton clinic on Monday.
It reopened when the law was held up in the courts.

The point being though is that the clinic closed when abortions were temporarily shut down last time, so it isn’t a stretch to think the same would happen this time around.

I’ll give ya that. Nothing wrong with actual health services. Hell even as a young teen I found myself in a Planned Parenthood once or twice to make sure my Johnson wasn’t falling off. And I don’t think any Catholic alive would be against such screenings. It’s the abortion industry and the support for that industry with the help of the tax payer they are horrified at. I had no idea many planned parenthoods actually did abortions. I thought it was just a random one here or there. I was actually shocked to learn in college that the same planned parenthood where I got screened performed abortions! Which is why at the next 40 days for life event, I went and showed my support.

I have no hang ups on Healthcare but abortion isn’t Healthcare. If they would remove that ONE service I’d be happy…and so would many others. But it’s a fallacy to think the services they provide can’t be found at other low income clinics. Hell there was 3 in my county that provided health screening for free to those poor enough. I had no idea though and many others don’t either. People screem, BUT where will we go! Look around, you might be surprised.

a simple google search of low income womens health clinics will turn up a LOT of options. People who support planned baby killing will not even look for the truth I live in a state that only has ONE pp still open, yet all the women who need it DO get health care on a sliding scale based on income. Go figure!

Exactly, supporters of PP believe the talking points, that PP clinics are the best and only option for affordable women’s healthcare and Birth Control.

If abortion services are so small, then they should have no problem ceasing to perform them in order to keep funding.

38% of their revenues come from killing children. It is heinous that poor women have to go for medical services to an institution that has a vested interest in convincing them to kill their child.
