I know the chaplain for the Chicago White Sox baseball team. He fills in once in a while for the Chicago Bears chaplain.
He told me there is Mass on Saturday evenings before the game. The Bears have ministers from different faiths hold services the evening before the game. The Catholic Mass is offered after all the Protestant services are held.
Some players go to Mass, but it’s mostly the staff like the trainers and equipment managers.
He told me he has Mass for the White Sox whenever they play a Saturday night home game. He offers Mass at 4:00, which is the earliest time the Sunday anticipated Mass may start. He said none of the White Sox players go to Mass, but many of the staff go to Mass.
I don’t know how many Packers players go to Mass or are even Catholic. I didn’t even know the Favre family is Catholic until after Brett’s father passed away. I know Favre had problems with alcohol and pain killers (more so with alcohol) but he’s over them now. His wife threatened to leave him if he didn’t give up drinking.
I’m not positive but I think Favre is now a practicing Catholic, even if he hates practice.
(Favre said that he loves to play the game but hates practice when he was thinking about retiring after the last game of the 2006 season in which he and the Packers destroyed the Bears in Chicago. I was at that game!)
