A friend gave me some information at church yesterday about SPUC’s letter wrinting campaign .

It’s purpose is to get as many as possible to write a letter to their Member of Parliament about any proposal to decriminalise abortion .

The importance of writing a letter is emphasised , rather than emailing or signing a petition .

Forgive me for being a stupid American, but I thought abortion was legal in the UK (although Northern Ireland is different) since the late 1960s? Is this about removing certain legal restrictions?

@Canvas , abortion in the UK is a criminal act , except in certain cases , those cases being what the Abortion Act allows and which permits abortion according to law .

Some want the law to be decriminalised so that the wording is changed so that abortion would be treated as a medical, rather than a criminal, issue.

The reality is that anyone can get an abortion legally in the UK if two doctors agree there is a medical reason for it.

I see. I just did a little homework and learned a bit. In practice, abortion is broadly allowed but technically speaking it should be more restricted per the actual law. Now they want to amend the law to remove the restrictions although they rarely prevent abortions.
