Forcing others to state certain phrases

I mean no offense…but I can’t say a phrase that I disagree with.

“one, holy, catholic and apostolic church” would be an acknowledgement that I view the Roman Catholic Church as such…which would mean, “why am I not Catholic then”. Since I’m not Catholic and view the “one, holy, catholic and apostolic church” to mean the spiritual church. I believe there are those in the Catholic Church that are saved and some that are not…same in my Church, I believe some are and some aren’t.

I don’t mind typing out Roman Catholic Church, but it makes typing some thread titles difficult.

Yet, I’m being told to say a phrase that I don’t believe.
 
I used RCC in a title, meaning Roman Catholic Church. I was going over some of my old posts and realised that I had been rebuked for doing this when I asked a question in August. Went back to change it (the edit button was gone) and already someone got upset over it. In August and today, I have been instructed that I’m to say “one, holy, catholic and apostolic church”…a phrase that I cannot use in good conscience. Do I recognise the Catholic Church as a Christian Church, yes. Do I believe they are “the one”, not in the sense they do.

I am still a little vague as to what you are being forced to say?

Do you believe in the Apostle’s Creed and you don’t like that part?

Having people rebuke you, or having them state their views that may be in opposition to yours, no matter how strongly, is not forcing you to do anything. Say whatever you wish, mind you it needs to be within forum nicety rules. If people don’t like your view, that’s their problem. No worries mate.
 
Nobody can force you to make a statement of belief. If your creed does not hold that the Catholic Church is the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church then fine…don’t say it. If you’re not making a statement of belief then I’m still not following you.

I have no problem with the Apostle’s Creed. I believe it applies to the spiritual church and we say it in our Liturgy. But when refering the Roman Catholic Church as an organisation (or when I type as I regularly do in shorthand, RCC) then I’m told, “it’s not RCC, the correct title is One and Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church”. To me that includes more than the Roman Catholic Church…thus would either defeat the purpose of distinguishing it from other denominations (yes, I know they don’t see theirselves a denomination, but as “the one”) or would be dishonest and acknowledge them as “the one” organisation, which I cannot do.

I’ve been told that it’s like saying Prots and Romanists. It’s actually more like saying SBC, PCA, URCNA, AOG, etc…none of which are insults, just as MD, Rev., CNM, RN, etc are not insults. 🤷

It is the Catholic Church…CC if you want to abbreviate.
 
You’d be better off just typing “the Catholic Church” and leave it at that. If you specifically intend to speak of the Western or Latin rite then say as much.

Thank you. I’m just used to “Roman” as distinguishing also from the Eastern Orthodox. I’ve known plenty of Catholics that have no problem saying “I’m Roman Catholic”. I also saw a group that were advertising themselves as Catholic Church (but they were Protestant) a few years back. So I guess I just don’t get why using the term “Roman” is offensive…it’s been used throughout history from my understanding (please feel free to correct that last part if I’m wrong).
 
It’s not offensive but may exclude Eastern rite Catholics. It depends on how you were using it. CC or Catholic church is correct.

And it can be offensive. I’ve heard a few anti-Catholic types put a weird emphasis the word (ROMAN Catholic church) that if they replaced “roman” with one of the “F” words it would almost sound the same. But that’s my personal take on it. I think that some (many?) non-Catholics are very uncomfortable using Catholic words that they just spit them out because it’s so distasteful to even talk about such pagan, idolatrous Mary-worshippers.

Actually the technical term (I think) is “Eastern Churches.” There are 22 “true particular churches” under the umbrella of the Bishop of Rome. We have Ruthenians, Greeks, Maronites, Ukranians, Chaldeans, . . .

So yes, it’s “different” from Eastern Orthodox in that they acknowledge the Bishop of Rome’s jurisdiction but they have always retained their own liturgical rites, their forms of worship and devotion, their language. They also allow married men to be ordained to the major orders (deacon & priest) although bishops must be celibate.

If you saw the coverage of the funeral of JP-2 and the institution of B-16, you might have thought that some of the clergy in unusual vestments were Orthodox, but more likely they were our very own Eastern Catholics.

Some may say that they would prefer you do so. That does not equate to you being forced to do so. Personally, I have not in the past year and a couple thousand posts ever encountered a request to use that phrase. Typically I will type Catholic Church or Roman Catholic if talking about the organization as a whole, lowercase c on church if I am talking about a building.
 
Thank you, that helps explain alot. I was unaware of the different segments under Papal Rule.

It was a really big issue in one thread I started…one person kept hammering (but there were several that were kind as well)…and it was the first thing noted in my other thread today. “Force” really wasn’t the correct word…“pressure” would be.
