Why don’t you travel the weeks he is gone? Then we he comes back you will be in a good mood and the two of you can enjoy your two weeks together.

I think the OP wants a home and a community and maybe even work, not just to travel.

Deltadelinquent, do I have that right?

Yes, Xan, that’s right.a community. I can’t go traveling because we have pets.

Tonight he seemed better. Even talking about taking the European job. So I just don’t understand it at all. Last night he was saying he wished he had never looked into either job.
It drove me crazy. It’s taken two years just to get him to admit it’s not working the way it is now. I can’t take another two years.

I guess I panicked. It’s telling that I should panic. Going back to that place to live fills me with dread. I’m normally a pretty stable person. It must be a measure of how bad that place is for me.

I can make my own way in the UK. I was a teacher and they need teachers there. I can’t teach in Canada with UK credentials, and they have too many teachers here as it is.
I also don’t have any references, or Canadian experience. So it would be a minimum wage jobs.
Yup, I’d be flipping burgers.

My husband is not dishonest. He’s a stonewaller. A brooder, silent. I tend to talk things out, even to death in order to see every possible angle, to consider every possible solution. He just sits there in stony silence and after a bit gets angry.
And he thinks that if we aren’t talking about something right this second…it doesn’t exist. Somehow, whilst it’s not been talked about, it fixed itself!

I think things are OK, and that I panicked. After two years I have no face to face friends in Canada. And everyone I know was asleep in the UK
Thanks everyone for the support.
You guys are great.

I thought it might work short term to make the weeks with the husband more pleasant, therefore reducing panic and maybe paving the way for a different kind of change. Taking care of the pets, though, would be difficult.

It was a good thought.

From the OP’s postings, my concern would be that if her husband saw her spending money on time on the island (as any absence would substantially increase expenses), he would treat that as an excuse for his absences and workaholism. I’d be afraid he’d say something like “I’ve got to work more to afford your time off the island!”
