Forgiven sins and suffering?

Hope apologetics is where to put this question? Anyhow… I have a friend who lost his wife about 6 years ago. He is a very devout Catholic, attends Mass everyday, recites the Chaplet of Divine Mercy everyday, goes to confession on a regular basis (I know this to be true) you get my point. He is still in so much despair over the loss of his wife. He made this statement " I think my past sins are why she was taken from me, and why I still suffer" I need help on a response that will help him. I just can’t seem to find the right words. Any help? Any specific church teachings on this would be very helpful. Thank you in advance. God Bless

II Cor 12:9 tells us that God gives us the grace to go through suffering.

Eze 18 refutes the notion of one being put to death for the sins of another.

Also, read the book of Job, his family was taken from him and it had nothing to do with his past sins.
