What if a person goes to confession, gives what is probably the most honest confession they’ve given, but totally forgot to confess receiving communion in mortal sin? They planned on confessing it the entire day, but once in confession and discussing with the priest one sin and honestly forgot about that sin until the car ride home.

Can the person receive communion in the next days Mass or must they go to confession again to confess that sin?

Thanks.

The way it works is that if you honestly forget, the sin is absolved under the condition that you confess it when you remember it.

Agree with Canuk. It has been absolved, and the person may, in good conscience, receive communion. But do formally confess the sin as soon as possible.

Peace
James

Yes of course…no worries.

It would have been “indirectly absolved” one may receive Holy Communion!

One is of course still obliged to confess it the next confession (unless of course one honestly forgets :))

(This is different than say someone concealing some mortal sin…like murder or lust or contraception etc…such would also need to be confessed as would the fact of concealing it and all other mortal sins that were confessed since ones last good confession…but what you describe is NOT that. :)… also …those readers with scruples…do not scruple here)
