Former Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Boutrous Sfeir, aged 98, died early this morning in a Beirut hospital. The Patriarch’s passing has engendered an atmosphere of grief and dismay among Lebanese of all confessions and faiths; Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims.

The former Patriarch, who led the Maronite Church during the tumultuous years of the Lebanese Civil War, was an outspoken critic of Islamizing and Arabizing factions in Lebanon and was a key player in the post-civil war politics that succeeded in maintaining Lebanon’s unique position as a Maronite homeland and the only Catholic country in the Middle East.
The Maronite Patriarchate has issued a statement: “The Maronite Church has been orphaned and the people of Lebanon grieve.”
Join us in prayers for the repose of the Patriarch’s soul.
Christ’s peace.
