I’m a recent convert from Protestantism to Roman Catholic. My parents - which are Protestant - forbid me to take RCIA until I’m 18 - I’m currently 16 years old.

Sometimes I wonder if I have or not an Eastern charism - maybe I’m just being hipster haha. I feel very attracted by the Eastern Catholic spirituality. I live in Northeast Brazil - the biggest thing we have of EC on Brazil is a Metropolitan Archidiocese on Paraná, South Region - where there is a big community of Ukrainians.I am trying to find an small mission around me - for sure, there won’t be anything big on our region, since we are very “Latinized” when it comes to Catholicism. A guy also recommended that I should search an ECC parish to receive the Sacraments and keep living on a Latin community.

I’d like help to know if I’m really an Eastern Catholic.

If you want to see what the Ukrainian Catholic church is like, visit when you get a chance.

I’m sure they will be hospitable to you when you are there. I wouldn’t know what the community looks like in northeast Brazil, but I would guess that most of this group of Catholics are Ukrainian-Brazilians. Do you know if this is a group that recently immigrated to South America, or if they have been there for generations and are already in synch with Brazilian culture? Maybe if you go there, they will all be talking in Ukrainian?

What draws you into the Eastern Catholic spirituality if I may ask?

These Ukrainians came here during the end of the 19th century until the first half of the 20th century - a similar thing happened to Italians,Germans and Japanese, in a slight higher scale. They are Brazillian-Ukrainians, for what it looks like, but the South Region itself has a lot of European culture - they might have kept it.

As I said, I might be just a hipster about the East, but :
  • Eastern Liturgy is beautiful, although I also love the Roman Rite
  • Eastern approach on Theology seems also very interesting
  • Iconography - pure hipster thing
  • I’m still beggining at the Western method of Mystical Prayers, but that’s a thing I’ll have to check later on the Easterns too.

Now let me reply with a different perspective.

I too have looked at Eastern Christianity with a “hipster” attitude, probably because I have long taken the Western Christian/Roman Catholic perspective for granted. So part of the exercise involves looking back at my own rite and looking at its own beauty. Just as a small example, I like that priests are celibate, and I like that we use unleavened bread. Just a personal preference, but small things like this can help us better appreciate our differences. But not be divided over them.

I also like that the Roman church has lightened up on fasting requirements, allowing for more freedom to decide how to do Lent and penance, especially in the modern world.

Nah, I’m not into that #MuhHailGreeksAndScrewTheLatins that some Orthodox do. Latins are amazing. What would be of us without St.Leo the Great?

Well, I love the atmosphere of the Roman liturgy and also its iconography it’s incredible. I plan to get some icons anyway in the future. Talking about priesthood, that’s a thing I’m discerning too.

That’s cool! Do some people become Eastern Catholic with hopes of being able to be a married priest, do you think? I could understand that.

Have you looked into the Latin mass? I’m not sure if it would be available in your area but you could check. Just type in “Latin mass” and your location. I think the best way to understand the Latin side of Catholicism is to pick up some TAN books. Pieta prayer book is great as well.

I’ll admit im not that familiar with Eastern spirituality, but as someone who has been called hipster plenty of times (I don’t consider myself as one) I wouldn’t think your reasons to be symptoms for hipsterism lol.

For what it seems, only the capital city of my state (João Pessoa) has it.And pretty rare.
That’s too bad. The Latin mass is so beautiful, not comparable to anything I’ve ever encountered.

Haha why, exactly?
Because they seem genuine. Hipsters tend to only do things because they’re cool; their hearts aren’t into it. If your hearts into it, automatically you’re just an individual who has different tastes. Liking things because they’re beautiful (churches, icons, etc.) or because it speaks to you or you just simply prefer it are genuine reasons I’d say.
