According to the Roman Catholic Church what is fornification? Are two teenagers kissing technically commiting the sin of fornification since technically they are unmarried? And if so, I have trouble understanding how that is wrong or immoral.

The Roman Catholic Church has no official teaching on fornification.

from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

2353 Fornication is carnal union between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good of spouses and the generation and education of children. Moreover, it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young.

Kissing doesn’t really fall into that category but if the kissing is highly sexualized, in other words an attempt to physically turn each other on, then I would say it is a sin. A chaste, affectionate kiss however is not sinful.

Here is the OFFICAL Teaching of the CC…

[BCCC #]2353 “Fornication is carnal union [sexual intercourse] between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good of spouses and the generation and education of children. Moreover, it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young.”

It is a Mortal sin:

Keep in mind that for a sin to be MORTAL three conditions MUST be met:
  1. Serious Matter [this certainly is]
  2. PRE-knowledge that it is a SERIOUS matter and a Mortal sin
  3. A freewill dsire to do it anyway.
Applying these same conditions to petting or kissing with the intent of sexual arousal too can be a Mortal sin. One is gravely obligated to intentionally avoid the near ocassion of sin; most espcially those that can become Mortal sins.

God’s continued Blessings,
Pat
