I was snowed in yesterday so I finally got around to reading Fortescue’s ‘The Orthodox Eastern Church.’ It was very interesting, but he seems to have an extremely negative attitude towards the Orthodox. I’m hoping to read something to balance or even critique Fr. Fortescue’s work. Any recommendations?

I will go further. Fortescue has an extremely negative attitude towards anything that does not conform to Latin practice.

In an article he wrote about the Melkite Church, he said that the married priests were “look upon askance”. Maybe by Latin clergy and faithful and Fr. Fortescue, but not by their own, I can assure you.

Try THE ORTHODOX CHURCH by Timothy Ware (now Metropolitan Kallistos). This is the standard introduction in English on the subject.
