I know Pope Frances has encouraged this. And I see other parish’s participating. I watched

the Baltimore Mass on EWTN where their Bishop spoke very openly about this.

Now, I am interested in knowing a few things. For clarification.

I was told it is the Bishop in any given area that says to follow this along with

the Novena’s. Is this true, does it need to be initiated by the Bishop before parishes can

do this?

Also, I wonder how wide spread this is…is your parish doing the Novena for the Fortnight

For Freedom? Or is there some place else I can look for this information?

Thank you and Blessings~

For information, visit the USCCB website: Fortnight4Freedom.org.

The Fortnight For Freedom is an initiative of the USCCB that takes different forms in different dioceses. Not every diocese is celebrating it the same way.

You don’t have to wait for a message from the bishop to do something for the Fortnight at your parish (unless the bishop has – for some reason – forbidden such things at the parish level). I would certainly advise looking to what the bishop is doing himself and what he is asking for. It’s always good to follow his lead and you wouldn’t want to plan something that conflicts with what he is doing.

Overall, though, it’s really just the U.S. bishops as a whole asking us to pray for religious liberty in an intentional way during this time. There’s no one way to do it. In fact, here are the USCCB’s 14 suggestions for parishes.

Our parish had an event as part of the Archdiocesan schedule of events last year, but not this year. I suppose they spread these things around so interested parishes get an opportunity.

I am curious if any CAF readers heard anything about religious liberty or the Fortnight for Freedom from their clergy during this past weekend’s homily? If so, what was said? If not, has it been addressed at all by your clergy or in your parish bulletins recently? Did you hear about it only from the CAFs?

No mention in the sermon at my local parish.
There was a brief mention in the local bulletin.
May God bless our priests and may they be strengthened in their quest to foster the faith of His children. Amen.

Permanent deacon gave the homily this last week and he was concentrating on the theme of radical discipleship in connection with the Gospel of the day. We do have the Fortnight announced on our sign outside the church urging parishioners to pledge to pray for freedom. We hosted one of the Fortnight Masses last year. I think we do our bit.
