I recently visited my (fervent Catholic) grandma, and while looking around in her basement, I found a book (more like a pamphlet, kind of) entitled “What Every Catholic Should Know” Vol. 2. It is in the “Practical Catholic Life Series” from (gasp) 1961. Has anyone ever seen this pamphlet or attended the series?

By the way, it is a very excellent read.

Old books are such a blessing. A grace, in fact. Try reading Father Faber sometime (1860s).

In fact the oldest book is… Holy Scripture.

Andrew, try entering the title in Googel and see what you come up with. I agree what csr said; old books are indeed a blessing. I have just finished reading “When Jesus Sleeps” by Luis Martinez. It is a really thought provoking book about spirituality. I am now going to try and find the rest of his books. This book like Frank Sheed’s apologetics books are pre Vatican II books I think so the theology is totally in accord with Church teaching.

for something similar, updated to conform with new CCC, try Outlines of the Catholic Faith from Leaflet Missalette or Flannery, and Handbook for Today’s Catholic, newly updated, from Liguori. I give the latter to those who come in to inquire or sign up for RCIA or adult sacramental classes, but I spend some time showing them what is in there–sacraments, commandments, moral life, prayers, beliefs, what is RCIA, etc. It comes in Spanish also.

Andrew,

The pamphlet was part of a series printed by the Liguori Publications (operated by the Redemptorists) . The archives of the Archdiocese of Atlanta’s newspaper references the series as having been used as a basis for meetings of the North Georgia College’s Newman Club in the early 1960s (the name of the publishing house is mis-spelled as Lituori). See:

Saint Luke’s - Apostolate In the Mountain Country

It is likely that a revised version of the text (under a different title) can be found in their current pamphlet series, “Catholic Basics”, perhaps as “Handbook for Today’s Catholic”. See:

Liguori Publications

Many years,

Neil
