I see a lot of controversy about James Martin here. I can see why, as sometimes he is on the “edges” of orthodoxy. But I do think he does it with a good heart in that he’s trying to bring more people into the beautiful Catholic Church.

Father Daniel Horan, on the other hand, seems to make nasty attacks against people standing up for the unborn.

Today, he repeated standard abortionist talking points about how if you want to be pro-life, you MUST be pro whatever liberal cause Daniel Horan is for. This is total nonsense, and particularly ironic coming from the same people who say “All Lives Matter” is offensive. I many of the other causes too, but for Father Horan to imply that you MUST be in favor of those things if you object to the unborn being legally slaughtered in mass numbers is a pretty abhorrent deflection in my opinion. That’s literally like saying “All Lives Matter”, which I’m sure Father Horan is against.

He called the March for Life “repulsive”

Here he goes with “Climate Change is the most important life issue”, I support efforts to fight climate change, but this is nonsense.

I have to admit, this makes me a little bit angrier than I should, especially against a Catholic Priest. But for me, it’s hard not to be. I know you can never tell what’s in someone’s heart, but it seems to me like Father Horan is parroting left-wing talking points and downplaying the importance of unborn lives simply to not aggravate his left-wing twitter audience. I hope this isn’t the case.

This isn’t really news, it should perhaps be in Moral Theology or Social Justice.

I’m not incredibly surprised to see a Franciscan say such things, unfortunately. I remember when Catholic Culture had a website rating guide and most Franciscan sites were red, meaning heterodox.

I’m not a fan of this new fangled idea that to be pro-life you must be for extensive state assistance for mothers, anti-death penalty etc. It’s muddying the waters and I think is intentionally done so to often hide the pro-abortion leanings of the one saying such things. But that’s just me. If you’re against abortion, in my eyes, you’re pro-life. No need to bring in a host of other issues to steal the term.

That post is disgusting. Not the one you linked to but the one he’s talking about.

My high school was staffed by priests from this Franciscan order (OFM). There were 28 priests there then. The high school is still open, but the number gradually dropped to zero.

The province he belongs to is one of several merging into a single province covering the entire USA. The same thing is happening with Fr. James Martin’s order, the Jesuits. 10 US provinces are becoming 4, in a decade likely only 1.

Most young men with views of Fr Horan are going into media, politics, or Community Organization, not priesthood. Orthodox young men join other orders. Young people may be influenced by Frs. Horan and Martin, but not in the direction of the Church at all.

This year 3 - THREE - young men entered the Jesuits novitiate from the US East Coast.

It’s sad that Orders with such a strong history of the Gospel are essentially committing institutional suicide.
