They gave a mission at our parish a few years ago and one of the brothers often comes to our parish for mass when visiting his dad. They are really orientitated toward the youth. The ones who gave the mission had special sessions for the kids where they did rap music and talked to them about vocations and their relationship with God.

I guess their mission could have been considered one of the more successful ones we have had since they brought 14 friars with them the second to last night for confessions and it took 3 hours to hear all the confessions of people who came.

They do a lot of missions in our diocese since the Bronx, where they live, is so close.

Franciscan Friars of the Renewal not to be confused with the venerable Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate

A fantastic group lead by the venerable Franciscan Father Benedict Groeschel. I love these guys! Anyone have any personal experiences to share?
These men are so holy! I just got done at a retreat this past weekend (I went last year, too) and was blessed to be in the presence of so many Holy religious. There were 2 Fathers available to say Daily Mass and Sunday Mass for us–Fr. Glenn Sudano, CFR and Fr. Gabriel Mary Bakkar, CFR. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything in the world! The friars are unlike any priests I have ever met. They have such a wonderful sense of humor 👍 But, they do it in a way that brings others closer to God. It makes the experience all the more enjoyable if you understand that being religious isn’t about being rigid. It’s about finding the opportunity to reflect Jesus in your actions.

I was so inspired by their actions, that I found myself recommitting myself to the promise I made a year ago to Jesus, that I would seriously consider religious life if He so willed it. I am planning to go to New York City in this next year to visit the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal in their turf and get in, elbow deep, into their work to find out who they really are and what their ministries are all about. I find it inspiring and helpful to be close to the Friars. I find them to lead me back to Christ if I am doubtful. I read their e-Letters on their website when I have free time.

I strongly encourage everyone with a Franciscan (or even Carmelite, LOL, which is what I was thinking about originally) leaning to visit them. You will be amazed at the spirituality of these humble and kind religious. God bless you! 😃

As a way of thanking Texas for producing so many friars, the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal opened a friary in Ft. Worth. I did a vocations visit with them and it was, in a word, amazing.

The friars are so sincere and serious when it comes to service. It resonated with me in a way I wasn’t expecting. I went with one friar to visit the homeless shelter nearby and spent hours talking to people. Of course the friar was wearing the unmistakable gray habit which drew the attention of a visiting evangelical youth group. I ended up spending nearly an hour explaining the need, nay the necessity, of Catholic religious.

The Jesuits are often called God’s Marines. If that’s the case, then the CFR’s are God’s Navy SEALS.

I wish I had a personal experience. My only knowledge of Father Benedict Groeschel comes from watching him on EWTN and scouring the EWTN TV schedules to find all programs and specials where he appears.

Father Benedict Groeschel made a memorable comment on one EWTN program, he was commenting about the name, Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, he said something like: “we use the word renewal, but it means reform.” 🙂

I am planning on contacting the friary in Fort Worth. Thank you for this post … although old, it is timely for me!

One of the FFR’s did our parish retreat a couple of years ago. Just fantastic.🙂

I used to be ‘CarmeliteGirl25’ – I changed my s/n after I forgot my password and got locked out of the account.

These religious are still incredible! Moreso, to me, today than they were 4 years ago because of how much I have grown in the faith since then. I eventually did visit the Sisters in Jan. 2010 but I know I am not called there, even though I would like to be. I still HIGHLY recommend them to ANYONE discerning a religious vocation. You cannot go wrong. 👍
