Hello, I am becoming interested in using incense at home. I have looked at some frankincense brands, and I am leaning towards the Cathedral Brand of frankincense. Does any one have experience in using this brand of incense? Is the Cathedral Brand of frankincense good? I want to try not to use too elegant of an incense blend because I want to keep the scent “frankincensey”. Thoughts? Thanks. God Bless

If you want good incense, you have to get it from the Orthodox–at least, get it where they get it.

I’m very serious here. The stuff sold in most religious goods catalogs are…well, let’s just say substandard.

You might have good luck if you take your question over to the Eastern Catholic forum and ask for some sources. Pure Somalian or Ethiopian frankincense is the best.

I’m not familiar with Cathedral Brand. If your parish uses it, then it may be fine.

We use Holy Transfiguraturation Monastery incense. They have Somalian and Ethiopian which Fr. David suggests. They are selling it on line in one pound cans. That’s a lot of incense. 🙂 If there are Orthodox or Eastern Catholic Churches in your area check in their bookstores. Our Russian Orthodox Cathedral sells both 1 pound and half pound cans of Holy Transfiguraturation incense. We only sell little 1 oz plastic boxes in my parish bookstore.

It’s very important you get a good quality self-lighting charcoal like Three Kings. You can get a “roll” of these disks which will last a long time since you only need use half or 1/4 of a disk with several incense “pebbles”.
