I’ve been reading a lot of stuff that says that we will be uninhabitable as a planet by 2050. AND I AM FREAKING OUT! I have no idea what we can even do and I am just so worried and I’m not even a Catholic yet so I can’t have the hope of even being able to go to heaven because I can’t utilize the sacrament of reconciliation. Any advice or even a pep talk?

Focus on Matthew 6 (I put out a bird feeder so I can see the sparrows every day):

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat [or drink], or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they?

Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?

Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them.

If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?

So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’

All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.

Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.

As a candidate, you simply need to ask your priest if he feels you are prepared to make Confession. Every candidate must make confession prior to their Confirmation/First Communion.

However, God is not playing “gotcha”. If you confess your sins to him, if you are sorrowful and you amend your life, should you die before you make the first Confession, God is mercy.

Calm down. Climate change doesn’t work that fast. Perhaps they meant something along the lines of “we must take action by 2050, or else.”

There are ways that the planet could become uninhabitable (for humans) by 2050. Here is a partial list:
  • Widespread nuclear war
  • Yellowstone megavolcano eruption
  • Asteroid impact
But do not worry. Jesus will be there. When the end comes, stand erect and raise your head, for your redemption is at hand.
Luke 21:25-28
“There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.”

But I’m a candidate not a catechumen.
The Little Lady said it all. God is not looking for reasons to keep you away. That is not love. Do you consider yourself a friend of God? Do you want to be friendly with God? That’s all that matters and Catholic voices like Dr. David Anders, Father Mitch Pacwa, and Bishop Robert Barron say the same thing. The details are a nice touch but the intent of your heart is all God is looking for.

Look at it this way: sometimes it rains and other days it’s sunny. Sometimes it’s hot and other times it’s cold. Climate change keeps to its daily paths as the world turns. 😏

I advise you to quit reading whatever you’ve been reading and find something more edifying and productive to read, such as works of great literature, history books, Lives of the Saints, Scripture etc.

If you’re going to get freaked out by every “doomsday” prediction, the vast majority of which don’t happen, then you don’t have the ability to handle reading such stuff and you should stop.

This is why I said I am turned off by the “alarmism” of global warming advocates. Who is saying it? What data are they basing this on? Is there actual scientific consensus? Is there evidence of bias in their results? (Like, maybe they are being funded by an alternative energy group, don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with alternative energy, but this is important). Relax, seriously.

When I was a kid, the environmental activists swore solemnly that by 2000 there would be no more green spaces.

They swore!

I hate to sound like a jaded old person, but many of us have things of a much more immediate nature in our lives to freak out about, such as people in our lives who are seriously ill/ dying, major home repairs, job/career situations, debts, some physical or mental health condition we must manage, caring for our families and even for our pets. Whenever somebody gets so alarmist over something like global warming that they are sitting on the Internet “freaking out” about it, I find it hard to relate, and it does not make me warm to their cause. It seems a bit juvenile to me, to be honest.

I also heard enough doomsday stuff during my life (Y2K, and that late 60s commercial about how “automation and machines” might “do away with our bodies”) to not take most of it seriously. I am much more concerned that we’ll have some kind of accidental or deliberate nuclear catastrophe by 2050 than I am about “the planet being uninhabitable”. But I don’t sit around “freaking out” over that either. I do what I can, and I pray, and leave it in God’s hands. The world is going to end for all of us when we die, whether that’s in some big mass death with hordes of humanity or all alone in our bed.

FWIW being raised a catholic (and having a catholic education) one thing one of my religion teachers had us go over was the five stages of death

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

because of this class in high school I more or less learned how to recognize the depressing aspects and move on and look for the root cause of the problem (where as most people are stuck in the denial stage and all too often by doing so are making the problem much bigger!!!)

What do you think of climate change? Social Justice
“Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind” …is something Einstein said and the thought is applicable to climate change! the reason I see little need to respond to every post, is because it seems useless to banter about details when far too many don’t even understand basic science of CO2 (which has various knock on effects),… for example did some reading of old post(s) on this website and found an Apr ’08 discussion,… then an Dec ’14 discussion,… sadly it seems…
