You are my friends if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you slaves,
because a slave does not know what his master is doing.
I have called you friends,
because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.

He allows us the freedom to choose to do what he commands us, we are not slaves, the Passion allowed free will to the extent that men dominated and destroyed God’s human form. Any thoughts from Tradition?

The Lord whom we serve, in His kindness and mercy, decided to add a further difference between the Old and the New Alliance by calling us friends since He has revealed to us the Father’s will.

Nevertheless, St. Paul does mention that from our standpoint we ought to be humble and consider ourselves servants, as for instance explained in Romans 6:

“Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey–whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? …] But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.”

So our freedom is in the choice of who will be our master (lord), whom shall we serve. And there are only two masters, for the Lord said: “he who is not with me is against me”.

P.s.: to be noted that St. John the evangelist clearly acknowledged the Lord’s kindness when he stated:
“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:16)
“Dear friends, now we are children of God” (1 John 3:2)

true

"if" makes it a conditional statement, and a choice of our will

Just as free will was shown in the OT

Dt 30:19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live
