I recently saw “Into Great Silence” (great film, btw), and in it a monk said that since God is all knowing and all good, everything that happens is His will, and for our salvation. Is this true? It wouls seem like, due to free will, not everything that happens is according to God’s will. Thoughts?

I saw the film also.

I guess it’s natural comment for a man who is a lifelong monk within an environment where all things are regulated and focused to the love of God and the Brothers. What the monk said is true within this environment that everything that happens is His will, and for our salvation.

In the outside world, where the focus is so often not God, not goodness, not love, it isn’t true that everything that happens and every choice we make is God’s will and for our salvation. God is all knowing and all good, but much of the time we’re not on bourd with His knowledge or His goodness, but stepping out against it by our outlooks and choices.
