Recently, my mother has had to go through all of my grandfathers things as he is old and it needs to be done. One of the items found was an old Family bible going back a long time. I haven’t had the time to go through it or anything, but I did notice that it had a the Masonic symbol on the front.

I looked this up and it is common for Freemasons to have a bible in their lodges and for masons to have family bibles to pass down. Does anyone know if there is a distinct difference from these bibles and normal Protestant bibles?

Disclosure: my grandfather is not a mason, but it seems his father or grandfather was.

The mission of freemasonry is to infiltrate the Church and attack it from the inside as priests or something else. And I think freemasonry is a banned topic here in CAF, I might be wrong. Anyway, that freemasonry bible should be discarded, especially by a fellow Catholic.

Edit to add:

Historically, one of Masonry’s primary objectives has been the destruction of the Catholic Church; this is especially true of Freemasonry as it has existed in certain European countries. In the United States, Freemasonry is often little more than a social club, but it still espouses a naturalistic religion that contradicts orthodox Christianity. (Those interested in joining a men’s club should consider the Knights of Columbus instead.)

The Church has imposed the penalty of excommunication on Catholics who become Freemasons. The penalty of excommunication for joining the Masonic Lodge was explicit in the 1917 code of canon law (canon 2335), and it is implicit in the 1983 code (canon 1374).

Because the revised code of canon law is not explicit on this point, some drew the mistaken conclusion that the Church’s prohibition of Freemasonry had been dropped. As a result of this confusion, shortly before the 1983 code was promulgated, the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a statement indicating that the penalty was still in force. This statement was dated November 26, 1983 and may be found in Origins 13/27 (Nov. 15, 1983), 450. taken from Catholic Answers by a staff.

It’s probably a Protestant Bible. Unlike the Catholic Church, several Protestant denominations do not have conflicts with Masonry.

The Bible is the Bible, although in this case, most likely Protestant.

Apart from Masonic footnotes and the like, it’s just a Bible.

I think you’ll find it is simply a KJV Bible with a masonic logo on the cover.

A bible with a masonic symbol. One is either with God or the Devil, we can’t please both at the same time. A masonic symbol and all that is masonic is contrary to God. Would you say the same if a “protestant” Bible had a satanic symbol on the front?

Yes, most likely an old King James Version. Look at the copyright page. How many books are in the Old Testament?

I need to point out that the KJB is a bible that is missing some of the books that make up the Bible… and there is a bible called the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures
which IMHO is only a bible in name. The translation is rather poor and in some/many cases incorrect. So to say a bible is a bible is somewhat misleading.

Agree! :yup:

Meh. I wouldn’t toss away a family heirloom. I wouldn’t use it for study (because I study using a Catholic Bible, not a protestant one) but I think telling someone to toss away a family heirloom on this basis is overreacting. And yes, I read your other posts. I don’t think this is akin to choosing the devil over God. Having a Masonic logo on the front does not make it any less the Word of God albeit incomplete.

As a Mason, I would tend to agree.

But if the Masonic Bible is giving someone distress, I would say, rip off the cover and donate it or find another member of the family that won’t have qualms about it. While they have sentimental value, it’s no Mason would want to see someone suffer anything over owning it.

I’ve said on this forum before: American and British Masonry is a silly old men’s club with a bunch of odd morality plays. Most continental Masonry (especialy in Spain, France and Italy) deserves every caution the Vatican has giving good Catholics.

Of course YMMV.

Thanks for the replies. Yea, I think it’s just a King James Version with the masonic logo on it. Was just curious about it because I don’t know a lot about free masonary other than the contemptous relationship with the CC in the past; even that I am mostly ignorant of.

And if this is a banned topic, I apologize–I was ignorant of that as well. Anyway, the Bible that was found isn’t something the family will be using, it’s more of a keepsake that goes back generations.

I understand your special nature. But do understand that the bible is comprising of its imprimatur.
