Somebody mentioned to me today that they were told that mass graves of aborted fetuses have been discovered near or around French monastaries and churches, the result of priests impregnating the nuns. I realize that this is on the level of a Chick tract, and that it is simply being suggested without evidence. I am posting here only to see if anybody knows of any factual information that may have been distorted or misunderstood to produce this story.

Actually Lazer I think it is a Chick tract. My future father in law emailed a bunch to my fiance and I am sure this was in there. I dont know where else I would have gotten this from. I would try to bring it up but I erased that garbage long ago.

I remember that on an Army Post in Hawaii–on the Post Cemetary–there is a Mass grave of fetuses…that didn’t make it to term…does this mean that the Army was “killing babies” or “aborting babies that soldiers made”–no…they were practicing the corporal work of mercy of burying the dead…there was a church in the news a year or two ago in chicago, I believe, that was managing to get the aborted babies from abortion mills and give them a respectful burial…would anyone acuse that church of aborting those babies if they found the grave? I think not.

Very clever sanctus - of course a lot of hospitals and monasteries in the middle ages and the Renaissance also acted as de-facto hospitals. Locals would get medical treatment (such as it was) from the sisters and brothers. Of course this would include pregnant women and children, and mortality rates being what they were …

Though there were Orders dedicated to ministering to the sick and dying…the majority of “medical” assistance took place at the residence of the one being treated. The idea of a truly centralized hospital system is a rather modern idea…but I digress…like I said there are any number of licit ways that that “grave” could exist…mortality rates, compassion, etc…then of course it could all be a big lie. I’m going with the big lie theroy for right now. Mass graves do exist from that time period…from the plague…another thing to think about.

The points touched on by Lily and Santus give a reasonable explaination. While the centralized hospital may not have been common, there were centers for the terminally ill as well as homes for unwed mothers. However, a little information is taken by such as Chick tracts and made into amassive scandal.

I heard the babies were buried in the walls of the secret tunnels leading between the churches and the nunneries. Really, that’s what I heard.

That’s rediculous. When ever abortion happens it is almost always well before a fetus is developed enough to have a sizeable body in which to even bury. I would look for the source of your imfo, doesn’t sound very probable.

I’ve heard something similar: that the babies of priests and nuns are aborted, cremated, and the ashes used to mark the heads of Catholics on Ash Wednesday. This kind of stuff is absurd and unfounded. Like you said, very Chick-like.

Here in Ireland, there are in many villages unmarked mounds called “the killeens”. Where they buried unbpatise babies and suicided ie not in consecrated ground. Anglicans in past centuries also buried these outside the churchyard.

Thankfully, in more enlightened and compassionate times, priests and clergy hold servicee of blessings and masses at thse places and many are now marked and respected as they should be.
These services are always very well attended in this land where a million died in Famine Times with no resting place marked at all; in bogs, in ditches, by the roadsides

Why cannot we always shed the mercy of Jesus on these places and events, rather than seeming to relish gossip and see things in the worst light?

Blessings this night…

This is a very ancient and widespread rumor. I cannot say it is entirely untrue, it could have some basis especially from the corrupt renaissance period…but most of it probably is false.

Nevertheless, I’ve heard it reported from many places. France and Italy in Europe. Anti-Catholic propaganda in America used to depict pits where nuns threw their babies. And when my dad went to Guatamala a little boy offered to take him to where “the nuns have their babies”…

So this IS a widespread rumor…
