How do Sigmund Freud’s ideas of inborn desires of “lust, greed, and violence” and the Id fit with Catholic doctrine? Isn’t there some contradiction? I thought that the Church taught that humans are inclined toward virtue, but that inclination is diminished due to original sin.

Yes. But humans have an inclination towards virtue, but that was diminished by original sin.

Well, I don’t know enough about Freud’s teachings to spot a contradiction. Isn’t Freud rather discredited today anyway? Seems I heard that.

Anyway, if there is a contradiction between Freud and the Church, I have no problem heaving Freud over the side. 🙂

Speaking as a Psychology student, I can say that Freud’s ideas are NOT discredited in modern psychology… just mostly modified and improved upon for the most part. Some of his idea were a little zany, but he is still a big deal.

Many of his ideas contradict Catholic theology, but certainly not all of them. I believe he was a very strict atheist, so Catholics should be careful to accept much of what he said, but we should also not discount his significant contributions to the field he pretty much founded.

Not that I think modern secular psychology is all that much saner than the people it claims to help, but it doesn’t make it unredeemable or unhelpful. I’d be in a sorry position if I said it was, wouldn’t I? 😉
