2 Cor 4:7-15:

Brothers and Sisters: We hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehhenna. It is also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce. But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) cause her to commit a adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”
It’s interesting that the Apostles (and all Christians?) carry about in the body the dying of Jesus… To me this is a very Catholic-sounding psg… since it seems that non-Catholics don’t like to focus on the Cross much…

also its interesting that Jesus says divorcing your wife causes her to commit adultery… as though it is inevitable that she will “marry” again… kinda strange… *

Does that paint a picture or what? Sadly, I think it possible for one to love their members so much as to choose Gehhenna over parting with them!

The original word does not mean “unfaithfulness.” It means “unchastity.” Big difference.

I understand the difference. Either way, if your spouse has sexual relations with some one other than you… based on this scripture you would have grounds for divorce. So my question still stands… why is this not recognized by the church?

There is no NT Scripture which states that a person can morally remarry after divorce except for those who met the requirements of the “Pauline privilege.”

In Matthew 19:10 His disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” The disciples declare that it would be better not to marry at all if what Jesus has said is true about divorce and adultery.

Now, if it were actually still permissible to remarry after divorce in the NT, the disciples would not have questioned Jesus’ hard teaching again in [Mark 10:1-12] and they also would not have declared that it would then be better not to marry anyone in the first place!

You can get a “civil” divorce to establish legal rights for each other and your children when it is necessary to separate from each other.

Marriage** is a “covenant” by “vow” between a man, a woman, and God, and it can only be broken by death.

Matthew 19:6 "So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

This is a command, not a suggestion!

Divorce is not recognized by the Church because it is God’s law that marriages cannot end until death parts the spouses and this law cannot be changed by the Church.
