So here in the states we are not required to abstain from meat on Fridays, but we are supposed to do some kind of penitential act. I originally thought about just not eating meat on Fridays, but really that’s not sacrificing anything. I love fish and salads, so no meat is not a big deal. What would others suggest doing? What do y’all do for penance on Fridays?

I usually abstain from meat, but if that’s not penitential for you, you could try abstaining from some food you like better – or abstaining from an entertainment, like television.

Another penitential practice is to pray the seven penitential Pslams: 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, 143.

I abstain from meat.

Can you help out at a charity during your lunch or in the evening?

Do you have any specific suggestions for this?
Sometimes shelters, soup kitchens, need help especially on Friday evenings or during the work day.
Even helping in a local school would bebefit others.
I myself used to volunteer at our local hospital in the ER 9pm to midnight Friday and Saturday.

I usually abstain from meat but I also try to say some extra prayers or sometimes I have fasted completely for that day.

Usually I abstain from meat and do at least, one of the following:
attend mass,
1 hour in the Adoration chapel,
visitation to the sick or needy,
pray the Rosary.

Abstaining from meat is not too penitential for me either. I want to start saying a specific rosary. I also like the idea of praying the penitiential psalms.

I have personally decided to pursue the no meat option. It is not so much as a penance for me, but because in doing it I will be brought to think about why I am doing it, much as in fasting, which I intend to also tie in to Fridays.

I am coming to think that this might be one of those “Catholic identity” things that had value there even if it didn’t always accomplish what it should have as a penance.

I usually go to adoration for an hour, and if my schedule permits, I go to mass.

Fast and abstain on all Fridays throughout the year. :yup: Keep it simple. Not because I may or may not like fish and/or meat, but because of the tradition that we abstain from meat from hot-blooded animals in memory of Christ’s death on a Friday. Fasting reinforces this tradition.
