We have two good friends, for the sake of anonymity I’ll call them Adam and Eve (I know, original). They have been in a committed relationship for two years or so. Eve is a devout Christian and Adam was raised in a household with no religious background or upbringing. In the past few months he has become very interested in Christianity and developing his spirituality and they have been reading scripture and going to church together. More recently, they have included my ladyfriend and I in their Bible discussions.
Here is my dilemma: Eve is evangelical and they go to one of those non-denominational megachurches. In the times with the four of us, sometimes we watch past sermons from their church. So far there hasn’t been anything really causing a big Catholic-Protestant divide on interpretation. Many of these messages are universal and they tie the scripture to daily life. Some have helped me in my Catholic faith to dig deeper, but I always have my antennae up for anything that is “off”. Watching these is ok, but it is SO stripped down. They pick out like 4 passages from scripture and basically tie a concept together. No sacraments, no saints, no Blessed Mother, I feel like our friend Adam is missing out on SO MUCH that makes up what it means to be a Christian.
At this point he is still coming to grips with basic spiritual concepts (Who exactly is Jesus, how do I pray, how does God work in the world, etc), but I know sooner or later something will come up that he has a question about that sort of makes Eve and I go head to head on differing interpretations and I don’t want to confuse him or make our time turn into tug of war with his spiritual understanding. To me things like the intercession of saints and the Eucharist are so crucial to the understanding of what Jesus gave us and I just would hate to see him not be introduced to it. How should I approach this stuff when it does come up?
