A Catholic friend of mine has been reading about black magic – by way of intellectual curiosity. She’s just ordered a spell book written by a black magic practitioner.

She’s a college professor in her 50s. I worry she’s putting herself in spiritual peril by reading the spells. She’s a close friend, and I know my advice wouldn’t harm our friendship. At the same time, she’s a a grownup who can read what she wants to. And I may just be superstitious.

How should I advise her?

I am curious as to her reasons. Is it a "know your enemy" sort of thing?

@Duke12VonFalkenburg: She definitely sees the devil as the enemy. She’s disturbed that many Catholics and other Christians don’t believe the devil and demons are real.

And I admit I get freaked out about this stuff.

@graciew: Thanks for this link. The Holy Father points out that even curiosity can get us in trouble. This is great advice. And I’m sure she’ll take it seriously.

First of all you have every right to be worried about your friend. This is coming from a personal experience that I just recently reverted back to the Catholic Church. I was for 5 years up till September of last year a practicing Wiccan. So believe me even just reading a book on black magic that has spells in it is inviting Satan into her home. I have a long story about me coming back that I’m still writing about. But from what I saw with black magic it lead to depression one that brought me close to suicide. If she is reading from Gardner he has a strong anti catholic rhetoric but it’s not mentioned in any of his books. You learn that when you are in the community and like I said I was in it for 5 years.

Well… If she is coming at it from the perspective of knowing your enemy so that you may defeat your enemy. She should still however seek to protect herself.

I think the OP’s friend is not intending to practice it but rather as a “know your enemy.” mentality.

I saw that just as I was just finishing my post but I would highly express a word of caution. Maybe have some holy water and a rosary near by if she is using it to know her enemy. Satan really hates the rosary

That precisely struck me. We are on the same page.

We are involved in spiritual battle, but knowledge of spells and rituals is not helpful Intel.

I am inclined to agree. Yet, I wonder if there is at least some value in being aware or knowledgeable in what practitioners of black magic do. For example I am aware that some Demonologists know about these things so that when they take on a case they will know what to look for if someone in the family had been practicing black magic or if an object had been used in black magic ritual. Ed and Lorraine Warren come to mind.

As someone who unironically used to practice occult magick, I can with 100% certainty say that no good will come from this. Sure there may be a “know your enemy” stance to this, but that is better suited to be handled by an actual exorcist not some curious professor.

There are somethings in this world that are better left unknown.

I talked to my friend this morning. I sent her the story @graciew recommended. After reading it, my friend canceled her order for the time being. She will discuss the matter with her parish priest before moving ahead.

Thanks to everyone for your (name removed by moderator)ut. God bless you!

Your friend is an adult. She is an educated woman. If she wishes to research something, that is her decision, were you her spouse or parent you could weigh in.

Researching cancer will not give you cancer, researching sexual sins at a educational level is far different than reading it for titillation.

How should I advise her?
If she’s curious about the demonic, give her “An Exorcist Explains the Demonic” by Fr. Amorth. He was an exorcist, and is now deceased, and explicitly says will cover no more than what needs to be known about the demonic.
