Frist to Support Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Oh, goodie. Let’s use our tax dollars to chase more red herrings.

Adult stem cells, and already-differentiated stem cells, have cured hundreds of people all over the world. These cases are well documented.

Embryonic stem cells have far fewer human trials, because every time they’ve been tried the results have been disasterous. The un-differentiated cells could not be controlled. Instead of curing the sick, they developed into fast-growing, violent, deadly cancers.

I have a better idea. Let’s leave embryonic stem-cell research alone, and support Frist’s opponent in the next election.

The problem is more than Frist unfortunately. Nearly all Democrats and a large number of Republicans support this research.

You make a good point about wasteful government science. This has to be fought on that ground and on the morality of the research. Neither one will win alone and even with both it doesn’t look good.

I fear another Space Shuttle. Once funded, these programs go on and on even if they produce little of value and there are much better alternatives.

You’re right. I agree that it should be fought on the junk science and morality issues. The problem is that everyone knows someone who has some sort of disease that they think is worth the distruction of life so that they can live. Even if that someone is not a family member, we have the Michael J Fox’s of the entertainment world who become the someone they know who is suffering.

A mother of a girl with Juvenile Diabetes sent Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle-D (whose staff sent it to State Senator John Gard-R) a package of a years worth of used insulin needles. She wanted to get attention for her daughter’s disease and protested Republicans in the state who voted against funding of embryonic stem cell research. Who is going to convince this mother who has to give her daughter 4 shots per day that her daughters life is not more valuable than an embryo? Logic doesn’t work when emotions are in play. Dear Lord! What has become of us?

An embryo is nothing more than a nameless, faceless group of cells that doesn’t exist as life in the minds of so many people – especially people who are or have loved ones who are suffering. How on earth can they be convinced? It would seem to me the answer lies in educating them of the failures of embryonic stem cell research. The problem there is they believe there is promise in the research so we need to keep trying until we find a cure (even if one will never be found).

Exactly. The seller has an easy sell: “We will improve and save lives”.

We have to explain the morality of it and the history of how inefficient government funded research is.

The swing vote in America gets its information in passing. Listening to TV while making dinner or walking from one room to another. Seeing a newspaper headline. A minute of radio news. Sound bites sell. The pro-research side can explain their position in under ten words. We can’t.

:yup: That sounds like a winner. We need Fr. Tad (from the Catholic bio-ethics center in Philly) to go inform these politicians! I wonder if they’d let him in the door. Probably not. They “can’t handle the truth!” 😃 Can politicians even be in the same room with the truth?

This about face sounds familar. In Missouri, my Gov, Matt Blunt went out of his way to tell everyone he totally supported the Culture of Life. But in fact, he did not submit his information on the Voters Guide passed out in our Parrish. So, 3 months later, after he was elected Governor by a pretty slim margin, he gave in to the Culture of Big Business. He supported both the Stowers Institute and Washington University (major stem cell research facilities) attempts to change the state laws on such research. Almost every pro-life organization in the state said this was a bold face lie to what he had promised before the election.
This is why I have a very difficult time supporting any political party. Although I wouldn’t argue that the Republicans are the lesser of the two evils when discussing most culture of life issues, I pay no attention to party affilation on issues outside of life realm such as war, economic or environmental concerns.

In the House of Representatives, Minority Leader Reid says that Sen Frist’s action brings hope to millions. I suspect the millions are all Democrats looking forward to the 2006 and 2008 elections.

Once again the Republicans snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

It should be presented as exactly what it is-human vivisection. Every time i see Michael Fox promoting fetal stem sale research i want somene to ask him just how many unborn children should be killed so you can be cured.

As a fellow Missourian, I agree 100%. Blunt is making a lot of enemies in the state. The problem is Claire McCaskell could run again and that would leave us with a pro-choice Catholic democrat who supports everything the culture of death is all about.

It’s tough out there.

Ambrose:

At least your guy is right more often than not - In CA, we just can’t find anyone who’s Pro-Life who can WIN! The Culture of Death has such control over this state that even the Archbishop of Los Angeles doesn’t speak out and refuses to back those who do.

Someone needs to remind the politicians, “Cures HAVE been created with ADULT Stem Cell Research! NOTHING except for GRIEF has been created with FETAL Stem Cell Research! That’s the SCIENCE!”

The Pro-Aborts have sold people such as Michael J. Fox and the Woman who sent the judge all those needles that FETAL Stem Cell Research holds the promise of a CURE for their ailments and those of their loved ones.

We have to find a way to show them that the REAL promise for a cure for them and their loved ones lies with ADULT Stem Cell Research.

And, we have to find a way to do that in significantly less than 30 seconds, since the average American’s attention span is now down to 6 seconds…

Blessed are they who act to save God’s Little Ones, Michael

Joe - Minority Leader Reid is in the Senate, which is the same body that Majority Leader Frist is in.

You are right that the Republicans once again “snatched defeat from the jaws of victory”. Although this isn’t as bad as the fiasco of a comprimise that made it possible for the Democrats to FILIBUSTER John Roberts, this is still proof that the Republicans don’t understand Pro-Life Issues and how they’re connected. This is also proof that even the Republicans can fall prey to the emotionalism that characterizes much of the liberal thinking on Life Issues.

Blessed are they who act to stop the slaughter of the Innocents, Michael

Frist has been totally unable to get any traction with regard to a 2008 Presidential bid.I think he is just seeking headlines. But how disgusting to see the prodeath crowd cheering that this “man of science” wants to promote embryonic stem cell research. He of all people understands the limited possibilities.

No wonder he isn’t getting anywhere with his political ambitions. He’s practicing the world’s oldest profession.

It’s Saturday AM and I just saw a blurb on CNN about Frists about face on stem cell research. What struck me is the power of the media to mainipulate the news which I know everyone is already well aware of.

They show clips of Nancy Reagan that brings to mind images of her beloved husband and of course mention her support of the issue, then they show Arlen Spector who’s bald b/c of chemo treatmenst due to his cancer. To those in the media it’s all about saving lives **PERIOD. **

No education on the differences of fetal and adult stem cells, just an implication that -* well this is the right thing to do - let’s save lives go ahead and use fetal stem cells. *It’s absolutely maddening to me how they present this issue.
