A true story from a Nun from an overseas order staying here, wearing the full monastic habit…

" I was helping a good man with the paperwork for a very difficult court case. He was basically being bullied and did not have the education to cope.
At one hearing, I was greeted by the Judge as “the good nun” and he went to great lengths to explain to me the situation legally speaking, even to the explaining how to beat the opposition, who were sitting opposite…

The courthouse in that town is right opposite the Franciscan Friary who sound a very loud and lengthy Angelus, and I was very aware of the nearness of the noon hour and how to act without disrespecting the court or the prayer…

Heaved a sigh of relief when it seemed the judge had closed proceedings, bowed my head, clasped my hands in prayer… heard one small scuffling only from around me.

When the angelus was over and I opened my eyes, the whole court was still assembled, in total silence. the judge still enthroned… The only exit had been the opposing party.

Took me totally by surprise…

It could have been very embarrassing but it was so deeply respectful and moving… Where else but Ireland would a court of law stop in its tracks for the angelus… "

I enjoyed that story ! I was thinking about the Angelus recently, and remembering
my convent school days in Dublin. Angelus at 12 O’clock and , at certain times of the year the Regina Coeli. When our family went to live in London, I felt very lonely. Something was missing, but I couldn’t quite work out what it was. I realise now that I was missing my friends and everything I had taken for granted, especially the stability of my faith community and regular prayer breaks during the day. 🙂

Thanks everyone. Yes we are blessed here in that many Churches still sound the Angelus. We bear w great witness when we pause to pray. I myself was in our Mobile Library in a small town, chatting to the librarian , when it began, and I stopped, went to the back and prayed. Have had to stop in the street too…
