Fruit of the Spirit

Good! All the more reason I want to hear your catholic opinion on the issue. Why does your bible say fruit instead of fruits?

I have to admit this doesn’t come to my mind. I think that’s a good question. The Bible says fruit not fruits, but I do not know why.

About the gifts - 1 Cor 12.

I would say that the sigular is acceptable as the concept is that it is one fruit made of many parts. Cahrity leads to joy which leads to peace and so on. In other words, they are not separate things, but parts of one complete unit.

Very nice. That is pretty much what I heard from the other camp. For protestants its all or none. Has to be a complete set. This distinguishes a true christian from a plainly nice atheist or cultist. A true christian shows all of these qualities. While a non-christian can only show bits of pieces of such qualities but not all.

Not really. Not all Christians have the fruit of the Holy Spirit. I would say they are not necessariy better than anybody. In fact one can find all types of Christians and not all exhibit the fruit of the Holy Spirit. It’s a fallacy to say that Christains are good people. I would say on the contrary.

I suppose thats another point of difference between you two. For Evangelicals all true christians has to be baptized by the Holy Spirit, and recieve this Gift.

I certainly differ with that understanding. How can one be given the gift with certainty? It’s a gift. It’s up to the giver whether he gives or not.

Yes, we can be baptized in the Holy Spirit but not necessarily recieve all the nine charismatic gifts. I know most people though not all, who are baptized in the Holy Spiirt do recieve the gift of praying in tongue.

Note - charismatic gifts are different from the fruit of the Holy Spirit as mentioned earlier.

A gift is something given by one to another. The recipient may not have done anything to ern it. The giver chooses to give.

A fruit is something that grows. It must first be planted, then it may need cultivation.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to us as the Spirit chooses for reasons that the Holy Spirit knows. Everyone is given them but they are only active when the Spirit allows it.

The Fruits of the Spirit are planted within us. We must work to manifest them in our lives. It is not easy to love our neighbor as ourselves, but we can do it if we work at it, pray about it, and allow the Spirit to work.

In other words, WE have the option of cultivating the fruits in our lives, we do not choose the Gifts.

nothing is ever certain in religion. but from a practical point of view, evangelicals have a better reason for striving with each quality. An evangelical “accepts jesus as lord & savior”, and in order to confirm to himself the validity & sincerity of his action, would strive to exhibit love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness , faithfulness, gentleness, & self-control. Being able to do so he could proudly tell his own self “I am a true Christian”. Thats what I call “good therapy”. Imagining a gift and turning it into reality. Everyone gets happy with this “born again” around.

you must be referring to seeds & vines. these needed care. fruits happen when the vine gets enough nutrition. and fruits develop rather quickly.

I agree. So the presence or absence of the ‘fruit’ cannot be a standard for determining whether one is a true christian or not. Rather a faithful has the potential.

Now, another issue i’d like to discuss…how come catholic bibles have 12 fruit attributes and protestant bibles only has about 9? What do you think? Honestly i have no idea.

But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity, Mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity. Against such there is no law.

Or is that a case of wrong bible grammer?

Hey they have 12 items here! How is that? Which is corrupted, the protestant bibles or the catholic?

We just showed how it is a matter of translation and not corruptness that there are different #'s of fruits.

It is harder to grow a grape then a bunch of them. However, many of us are only trying to grow one, and we treat the vine like an apple tree.
