Which version of the Divine Office/Breviary does the FSSP use? (and where can I get a copy?)
I’ve fallen in love with the 1954 Beneddictine Short Breviary with the supplemental full psaltar and daily readings–enough so that I’m considering putting my 1976 revision of the Office on the shelf.
(Ok, so I’m a fanatic that likes to cycle through the entire book of psalms each week–so what?
)
However, since the Divine Office is official liturgy I’d like to stay in sync. with a group that has been granted permission to use a pre-VII version of the Liturgy of the Hours.

I think they use the one incorporating the 1962 rubrics. Not too sure where you can purchase it but you can always use
breviary.net with the following modifications:
All antiphons are now “doubled”. If you are reciting ina group, the chanter (or whoemever you choose) will say the antiphon upto the asterisk “*” and then everyone continues.
No need to recite the prayer Sacrosancte, or the Pater/Ave/Credo. The antiphon of the BVM is now after Compline alone according to the season and has the same indulgences as Sacrosancte.
LAUDS and VESPERS:
Only I Class feasts have First Vespers. Do NOT therefore:
i) say the First Vespers of the day following (i.e. er.g. everything form the Common of Virgins) but use the Second Vespers of whichever day it is (e.g. the Common of Martyrs) [on the site the way it is done is Vespers of the Virgins with commeoration fo the martyr)
ii) If the feast is a Double of the II Class followed by a Double, do not make the commeorations of the double feast at First Vespers.
Omit the Commeorations of the Cross and the Suffrage of the BVM and All the saints at all times.
Omit all the preces in all hours except for the ferial preces at Lauds and Vespers. These are to be said on:
-Ember days of September
-Lauds on Saturday Ember days (except during the Octave of Pentecost)
-Wednesdays/Fridays of Advent and Lent (and Passiontide)
PRIME:
-No fourth psalm when Lauds 2 is said.
- Use “Regi Saeculorum” as the capitulum always
- the Lectio Brevis is always from the season and NOT form None of the feast anymore
-The Proper Vesicle “Qui sedes…” is not used for commemorated feasts.
-Athanasian Creed is only on the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity
LITTLE HOURS:
Same, . III Class feasts-only form the feria. II Class feasts-psalms of the feria and the rest from the Proper/Common, and I Class feasts psalms of the Sunday and the rest form the Proper/Common
COMPLINE:
I and II Class- Sunday
III Class: feria
MATINS: The biggie:
Most saints (all feasts of the III Class) no longer have 9 lessons. So:
i) recite 9 psalms from the feria in 1 nocturn for III Class featss and Sundays (for those 3rd Class feasts with proper antiphons these are retained)
ii) usually goes like this:
-First lesson from the occurent scripture and its responsory
- Second and third lesson combine and read the 3rd responsory
-Sundays: Third lesson is the Gospel homily (lessons vii, viii, ix), followed by the Te Deum. On Sundays of Advent and Lent/Passiontide where the Te deum is not said, the IX responsory is said in its place.
- III Class feasts: Read the contracted lesson provided in small print if the feast is reduced to a Simple (i.e. commemoration as 9th lesson). If there isn’t one then read lessons iv, v, iv together. Then say the Te Deum.
I don’t know whether you have a calendar because at some times that will be most useful to see which feast day you are celebrating.
I can tell you, if you want the change in rankings and precedence which are different from
breviary.net (for example, in Septemeber, the Ember Days are always outranked in their calendar, but not in the 1962 calendar), but a calendar might be most helpful. .
Perhaps you could try out the one at the Latin Mass society of England and Wales for the moment.
