Hi Celtic,

I had the privilege of visiting OLGS last month for a few days. It is a very special and grace filled place. The seminarians and priests there are a tremendously fine group of men. I think you will experience their presence there as a profound witness to the faith. Also, the sense of brotherhood is very strong.

There is every reason to relax and look forward to your visit. There will be a “guest master” who will answer any questions you may have. The seminarians are also quite helpful. During the mass and prayer times there is usually someone who will hand you whatever prayer book or missal you may need. I even received help with staying on the right page. I think you will find the mass and prayer times quite an encounter with mystery. At communion they use two kneelers with veils where you will place your hands under as you receive communion. I think the kneelers are just for first year seminarians and visitors. I saw the rest of the seminarians kneel closer to the altar receiving communion first. Also, I noticed the altar servers were the only ones doing responses during low mass. High mass on Sunday is beautiful needless to say.

If you have an opportunity to sit in on the classes I very highly recommend Fr Goodwin for Latin. He will not disappoint (he has quite a riotous wit in class). I also recommend Prof. Sebastian Carnazzo who taught a class on the Pauline Letters which I found quite awesome. I’m sure any of the professors will be worth the time, but those are the only two names I can remember.

When you get there, don’t be startled by the big German shepherd running around. He’s quite peaceful. Only one warning though, you are likely to feel a strong sense of sadness when it’s time for you to leave. I did.

Unfortunately for me, at the end of the month that I visited they ended up making the age limit of 35 firm. I was notified by the vocations director about this the week after my visit, of which he had mentioned the possibility of during my visit. Up until this point they considered men over the age of 35 on a case by case basis. I must admit I experienced a great sense of sadness, but I was resigned to God’s will from the beginning. I called the vocations director back to personally thank him for the privilege of my visit. My next visit will be to the Franciscans of the Immaculate. Please remember me in your prayers.

All you need do is attend. Since responses are not said aloud in the Tridentine Mass (except by the altar boys to the Priest) - all you need do is take your lead from the congregation. There could very possibly be missalets in the pews with Latin / English translation. It’s all a beginning for you. Just follow and listen and learn - and ask God for the Grace to continue in His Holy Will. I agree with others. Speak with the FSSP once there and express any apprehensions you may have, if possible. You will come away inspired. God bless you - and say a pray for all of us !
