Greetings! May the full “Exorcism Prayer against Satan and the Apostate Angels” by Pope Leo XIII be said by the laity? It addresses these evil “parties” directly with strong language of exorcism. The introduction to this prayer on most websites and older pamphlets state that it may and ought to be said by the laity “in their own name”, whereas some websites say that it should be said by priests only. What are the risks and benefits of laity praying this prayer addressing the “rebellious spirits” directly? Thank you!

The current teaching on that prayer is that laity aren’t supposed to say it because it does address demons directly. The Catholic Church teaches that only priests should do that because it’s dangerous for a layperson to directly address a demon. You could end up attacked or possessed.

Laypeople should just say the normal standard Prayer to St. Michael and ask for help from God, Mother Mary, St. Joseph, St. Michael, St. Benedict etc.
