I subscribe to a daily retreat reflection. And todays offered by the retreat master, Fr.Rory Pistick, SSL was outstanding.
He says that "we are all aware we live in a competitive world, the pressures that come with that aren’t altogether good, of course. But neither is competition altogether bad, because after all the spirit of competition does much to cultivate excellence. Cynics have noted that even religion is competitive, and to be fair, there is some truth to that. But we are expected to sort thru it all, by seeking and demanding excellence in criteria of price, performance and perception.
How much is this religion going to cost me? Yet, in our modern world so many of us settle on whatever religion will cost them the least…not in terms of dollars but rather the most permissive ethical codes. That’s the selling point for some. But Christ told us in today’s gospel… If you love Me, keep my Commandments. So let’s be frank genuine Christianity always demands and costs more than imitation Christianity.
That’s why so many other Christian faiths struggle with why we have 7 sacraments, Codes of Canon Law, a Catechism. Fortunately, our popes through the last century have recognized that and have been fervent in their adherence to our faith.
Fr.Rory concluded…The full price of our faith and discipleship means that we need to give our whole heart to helping others to come to the full perception of the fullness of our faith.
Isn’t that a wonderful way of looking at it!
