There is a very interesting custom in the Syro Malabar funeral tradition for priests in which the priests open casket is processed around the church and knocked against it’s doors. This custom is known as “Bidding Farewell”, the priest is giving his final blessing to his parishioners and telling them I am leaving now for paradisa but it will all be okay. During the procession the distinct funeral hymn “Wita Wangunnen” is sung, in which the priest gives his blessing and bids farewell to the Church and his people. “Wita Wangunnen” is the Malayalam translated version of the Syriac hymn “Edta pus lek”. I was wondering if any other Churches have this custom or if it is distinct to the Syro Malabar Church.
