alright so this guy on a message board thinks its strange that even though the church teaches that life beings at conception, that people don’t have funerals for babies lost through abortion or miscarriage

so to my question quesiton

does the church say that you can’t have a funeral for a unborn child? why (church documents would be nice)

Could you please clarify what you mean. What do you mean by “unborn child”? Do you mean a child who is born dead by abortion, as a result of miscarriage, or stillborn? Because, of course, you couldn’t have a funeral for an unborn child.

And the Church does encourage funerals (or at least memorial services) for babies who die via miscarriage/stillbirth.

A lot of parishes have annual memorial services for those families that lose children prior to birth.

Usually we don’t see a requiem Mass for a stillborn child but graveside committal ceremonies and funerals rites using the rite for ‘children who died before being baptized’ are not unheard of. There is even a prayer specific to a stillborn child in the Rite of Christian Funeral.

i guess this would help how would your respond to this
One thing I always wondered…if there is no difference between being born or not, and life, humanity, and all that is you starts at conception…why aren’t there funerals/services for miscarriages, just as you would have a funeral for a 2-3 day old infant.

Sounds like a great idea. I’ll propose this to our pastor for October 31st
