Today our Parish had a reconciliation service. As we were waiting in lines for our turn, beautiful instrumental music was playing in the background. Suddenly, I heard “Come, Come Ye Saints”. I burst out laughing (I’m not a quiet person in real life) and I couldn’t even explain it to anyone. I get up to my Pastor and tell him and he bursts out laughing. A couple of people came up to me and asked me what sin I had that made the Priest laugh. 😊

I don’t get it.
Is that a mormon song? And if so, why was it being played at your parish?

Yeah, it’s a Mormon hymn. They were playing a CD that had a bunch of instrumental music, so there was no words. It was just playing in the background as people were waiting in line.

Pretty sure I was the only one who knew it was Mormon until I told the Priest.

Looking it up, the music was written two years before the words. There is a Christian version that rewrites the third verse. Tabernacle Choir sings it frequently.

It’s a beautiful song…I know that the Mennonite Brethren have it in their hymnal as well. I’ve sang it with the congregation at a MB church I visited with friends.

I used to teach at a Catholic high school which had some Mormon students. One such student shared a story in Theology class: When her little brother started kindergarten he would often get off the bus announcing yet another girlfriend. Finally the family [jokingly] renounced him as a polygamist.

That is funny. Our hymn book says it is from an old English tune. William Clayton wrote the words as the Latter-day Saints crossed the plains on the way to the Rocky Mountains.

It’s listed as “All is Well” in some hymnals. It was written by William Clayton and he was Mormon.
