I’m a Christian starting a multi-faith effort to help the people affected by war in Iraq. I would like people of all faiths to work together, and asked The Catholic Church for support of my effort and I was referred to this forum for your review.
This week I met with the Secretary General of the Islamic Center of North America, which represents more than 600 mosques, and they are interested in being involved in this effort. They actually have the same vision, realizing we must unite.
Let me explain how I got involved in effort.
I have been consumed with disgust by the activities of Al Qaeda and the insurgents in Iraq. Terrorism has not been eliminated, and the task of eliminating it sometimes seems impossible. But, remember, we were told as children, “You can’t fight fire with fire.” I’ve been searching for a more effective way to take out these terrorists.
What I’ve come up with is an effort to unite people of all colors and faiths toward a joint effort to help the Iraqi people. I believe this would improve the image of the West and lessen the chance of terrorist activity.
People are sending supplies to the coalition forces in Iraq, but what about the suffering Iraqi people? Many Iraqis that think we are invaders rather than liberators and that the Americans will leave abruptly before they can stand on their own – like we did in the Kuwait conflict. What if multiple faith organizations united and sent supplies to the Iraqi people? Not only would it make the Iraqi people realize we care about their suffering, but it might also make the extremists understand that “America” and “non-Muslim” are not synonyms for evil. Hopefully the seed we plant might even thwart the recruit efforts of the terrorists.
Although there are organizations helping the Iraqis, I don’t think there is any effort based on multi-faith collaboration. I think this is an important element of this effort.
I hope to have a website up sometime in September. Please send me any suggestions, comments, or questions. Thank you for your time.
