Does anyone know the title of the person who carries the galero in procession during a Pontifical Mass? Also the title of the person who carries the tale of the Cappa Magna? See the photos below for an example.

I don’t know, but I detest his outfit.

I can deal with cappae magnae and ferraiuolos(ferraiuoli? whatever) all day long but the cuffs, breeches and cravat are just too much for me. I won’t complain a bit if a sovereign dresses his servants like that, but within the ecclesiastical context it seems… to much… even for me.

I think the idea behind it is that this man is supposed to be or represent the cardinal’s household–kind of like papal household vs capella papale–and as such, he is a layman, although in this case also a seminarian.

edit: I have moments of “that is simply too ridiculous” sometimes. They are short and they go away and they are irrational, but they are visceral. I think the issue for me is not ostentation and ceremony at all–I don’t mind that a bit–rather it is the mixing of symbols, the sacred (ministers) with the profane (cardinal’s household). After all it would look a bit ridiculous to have the cardinal’s cook processing with him… I’m done now. I can look at the picture and not be revolted.

It’s really easy to see the cardinal in this picture. It’s a lot harder to see Christ.

It’s all context dependent. I’m sure the people who attended that, seemingly EF Liturgy felt like they were in the heavenly court.

Personally, I love it. I’m tired of “plain vanilla” attire.

The history of the leggings is interesting. A shapely calf muscle was thought to be a sign that a man would be a good provider. Men would show off their calf muscles with those long hose and trousers that tied just below the knee.

Thank you all for the comments. This was my first Ordination and first Solemn Pontifical Mass. I can assure you, those present definitely felt the presence of Christ.

I happen to love the “smells and bells” of the Institute!

Here are a few more pictures of the Mass.

I like the EF but I do not care for the cappa magna.

It is just too much.
