Hey Everyone,
Tonight at work, there was a discussion on gambling being right or wrong? I fall on the side of, if it is not taking away from your obligations as a parent or caretaker and it is not becoming destructive and harmful in your life I see no problem with putting a couple of dolllars on a lotto or raffle ticket.Of course a Gentlemen I work with who has a mennonite background disagreed and brought up the casting of lots of Jesus’ garments. I replied that If Im not mistaken thats how Judas successor was chosen,he said no they drew straws:hmmm: Of course that went nowhere when I said isnt that a game of chance also:shrug: . Well he said he would provide me with scripture that proves gambling wrong. My question is what verses might he try to use and what are some of the arguments that refute this claim.
Thanks All

Unfortunately, I don’t have any scriptures for you, but I feel fairly confident in saying that the Catholic Church teaches that gambling is acceptable as long as it is done in moderation. I believe it only becomes a sin when it begins to affect family and/or other commitments or it becomes an addiction. I’m sure someone here can verify this and give you scripture behind the teaching.

I have a problem with gambling and the church. A few years ago they started “casino night.” That, to me, is a huge problem. For those who spend too much on games of chance might see this as approval for what they are doing.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church: 2413 “Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of other. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement. Unfair wagers and cheating at games constitute grave matter, unless the damage inflicted is so slight that the one who suffers it cannot reasonable consider it significant.”

The catechism says that gambling is not inherently wrong. However, there is the possibility of abuse. This is also the case with alcoholic beverages, prescription medication, etc. When used properly, and when gambling with expendible income, gambling is morally permissible according to the Catholic Church. There you go. Comments welcome. Have a great day!

As my dad always said:
The lottery is a voluntary tax on the dumb. 🙂

However, our school is selling raffle tickets, wanna buy?👍
