Cribbage is definitely a great one. As are carcasson (sp?), netrunner, caverna, europa universalis 4.
Carcason and Caverna are board games, caverna is a little expensive and can seem intimidating because of all the pieces, but is such a blast to play, carcason is less intmidating but still a lot of fun.
Netrunner is two player collecters card game. It has a really interesting game dynamic because there are different rules for each of the two characters. one person plays as the “evil corporation” and the other person plays as a hacker trying to steal the big corporations secrets. So the corporation and the “runner” (hacker that “runs” on the corporation to steal their secrets and plans etc) have different actions available to them, slightly different rules of play, as well as different card options. It really adds a neat twist to the way these card games typically play out and is a
lot of fun. Also, unlike a lot of these cad games netrunners booster packs all have set cards in them. So, if you want a certain card to complete your deck you don’t have to buy booster pack after booster pack hoping to get the card you want, you just look up which booster pack it is in and buy that specific pack, so, there isn’t the same kind of incentive to just keep spending money on cards as there often is with these kinds of games.
And finally, Europa Universalis 4, this is a computer game where you choose a nation and a period in history to start from and try to grow and expand your nation. It is a great game, and a lot of fun. You can play single player or multiplayer, however, in order to play multiplayer you will need a computer for each person and each person will need to purchase the game, which can up the cost. It really is a blast though with a lot of complexity to it from international relations, trade, economy, wars, alliances, exploration and colonization, religions, technological advancement and much more carefully accounted for so that you can pretty much always go more in depth while playing it. Each nation has its own special events that trigger during certain time periods to reflect the way history developed and each nation has its own specific strengths and weaknesses. Just a fantastic game all around.
