Hey, all.

Do you know of any fun (free) catholic resources for kids? I’m talking about stuff like online computer games, youtube videos, etc that could help me teach my 8 year old about the faith.

Our faith formation program filled up before I could enroll him, so I need to make sure he is learning enough at home so that he won’t fall too behind when I get a chance to enroll him next year.

I recently read about how computer games really damage a child’s developing brain. So I would never recommend online games to learn something.
You might consider reading Bible stories to him – here’s a suggestion: The Unofficial Holy Bible for Minecrafters.
I don’t quite get it but it seems to be popular with 8 to 10 year olds.
Any time a parent sits and reads with a child, they are usually engaged, since they like the attention.

As someone who is being raised a Catholic, I would say (to be totally Honest) that Video Games can be good or bad,
This article is a good read for you, to weigh the issue.

Considering the age, I would say that if you are going to allow Youtube videos to be watched or Video Games to be played, you need to do it with the child.

The whole point would be so you can learn with the child. The worst thing you could do is to not allow any access to media, or to allow them to learn how to use it, leaving you clueless.

Summary: Slowly introduce Video Games and Youtube to children, but make sure you are learning and playing right along with the child.

A good option would be a LeapFrog Tablet, which only has educational games or getting other alternatives.

Veggietales DVDs are pretty good, but the best ones are called “The Greatest Story” by Hanna Barbera (free to watch on Youtube). They are called by titles such as “the creation” and “David and Goliath” etc. I watched them as a kid and I still remember them to this day!
