I was doing a little google search of the status of Gay marriage in Ireland and came across this article. It says there is evidence that the Church once had a rite for Gay unions. Has anyone ever heard of this before???

When Marriage Between Gays was a Rite

I am sure that people could “find” rites which would have joined people and their pets in marriage if they wanted to.

I’ve heard of it before. It isn’t true. The “gay marriage rite” myth was started by openly gay historian John (IIRC) Boswell. His work in this area has been thoroughly discredited by historical peer review, but still manages to find some measure of respect by people who don’t know any better (or don’t want to know any better). Basically, Boswell set out looking for “evidence” to justify his own personal choices and his open dissent from authentic Christian teaching. Conveniently, and due to a great deal of distortion, he found what he was looking for.

Here’s a handy review of Boswell’s work.

Even if these rites blessing homosexual unions were administered, I doubt that they were in accordance with the ecclesiastical law of the time. In any case, by pointing out one or two examples of homosexual unions over two thousand years of Christian history does not create an historical consensus of the Church on the issue of gay marriages.

P.S. I just skimmed through the article given in the above link. It seems to demonstrate fairly well that these ceremonies were not intended as ecclesiastical blessing of homosexual unions. Good read. thanks!

These are the same people who want to argue that David and Jonathan were gay lovers, because the Bible talks about David loving Jonathan “with a love surpassing that of women.” Never mind that if it had been such common knowledge that it made it into the OT, they would have both been stoned to death, never mind that David had lots of wives and lots and lots of children. The same folks say Our Lord and Saint John the Beloved were gay because John leaned his head against Our Lord’s Breast at the Las Supper. Puleeease!!!

Not to people just becuase someting is on a website its not necessarily true.

Is Jack Chick true it has a website?:banghead:

The “Gay wedding rites” that Boswell talks about were nothing of the sort. Anciently, people and families sometimes had terrible feuds that threatened the very existence of their already-fragile societies. The Church often stepped in to make peace between them.

In early medieval times, it was customary to seal that peace with a Church ceremony in which the former combatants would vow to love and respect one another for the rest of their lives and to never raise a hand in anger. This was considered a solemn religious vow that, if broken, could result in excommunication and the loss of heaven.

A homosexual like Boswell sees the Church record of two men vowing before God to love one another, and assumes that it is a “gay marriage”. As mlchance pointed out, all responsible historians have disavowed Boswell’s sloppy research and faulty conclusions.

I wonder what Boswell concludes when the record shows entire families participating in these ceremonies.

Hope this helps,
Paul
